“I just came from Kaia’s.”
Finnian’s grip on his teacup suddenly tightened. He looked at his mother, saying nothing.
Elaine dropped her designer handbag on the sofa, crossed her legs, and leaned back, taking a deep breath. “Finnian, I’ve made up my mind. You need to finalize this divorce with her as fast as possible. Don’t let her drag down the Sanders family’s reputation any further.”
Hearing this, Finnian’s expression instantly shifted. “What did you say to her?”
“What could I say? I just gave her a reality check. I told her not to be ungrateful and not to bite the
hand that fed her.” Elaine’s anger flared, her voice rising naturally. “You should have seen the way she talked to me. Her attitude, her tone–she acted like you weren’t good enough for her. It was laughable. What does she have to be so arrogant about? Her background isn’t even in the same universe as ours.”
Finnian’s face darkened completely. A chilling aura rolled off him, his thin lips pressed into a hard line.
Assuming his silence meant agreement, Elaine continued to push. “Listen to me, Finnian. A woman like that is nothing but trouble. If she’s acting like this now, wait until she gets even more power–she’ll walk all over you. Besides, once you’re divorced, you can easily find someone better, someone more obedient. Why put up with a self–righteous snob who thinks her talent gives her the right to step on you? You can’t let a woman control you, and you certainly can’t let her become a liability.”
The freezing tension radiating from Finnian grew even more oppressive. He suppressed his raging temper, his voice dangerously low. “Are you finished?”
Elaine froze, finally realizing that her son’s expression was completely off. He looked furious.
Finnian stared at his mother with a severe, penetrating gaze, making Elaine’s chest tighten in panic.
“You don’t sit in on corporate board meetings, so you have absolutely no idea what top talent means to this company. The entire R&D systems for both Aethelstan and Veridian Future are running on Kaia’s expertise. Do you have any idea how much the conglomerate’s stock will plunge if she leaves?”
Elaine’s mouth fell open, utter disbelief washing over her face.
“You have no idea,” Finnian answered for her. “You only hyper–focus on her personality, but you’ve never actually bothered to understand her. You don’t know how much her departure will cost us. Knowing absolutely nothing, how could you possibly go pick a fight with her?”
Elaine’s face went from flushed red to stark white, then shifted to a sickly pale color. Her lips trembled. “Finnian, I…”
“Forget the company for a second. She is Brynlee’s mother. Even if we divorce, she will always be Brynlee’s mother. If you treat her like this, what is Brynlee going to think when she grows up?”
Elaine was completely silenced. Her eyes welled with tears, and she looked deeply wronged. “I only said those things for you! How could I just stand by and watch my son get bullied by some woman? |

was heartbroken for you, I wasn’t thinking about stock prices!”
“Mom, you’re older now, you need to use your head. Think about what you should say and what you shouldn’t do. Stop acting purely on impulse.” Finnian had always known his mother was
simple–minded, but today, he finally called her out on it.
Elaine turned even paler. If an outsider had cursed at her, she would have ripped them to shreds, but coming from her own son, she didn’t have a single word in defense.
“Kaia has already done enough. She hasn’t done a single thing to wrong me. She raised Brynlee, which was incredibly difficult. Aethelstan practically relies on her research to maintain its massive market share. She’s just one woman balancing a family and a cutthroat career, and she executed both flawlessly. I have absolutely zero complaints about her.” Finnian laid out exactly what was in his heart, leaving Elaine feeling even more deflated.
