“Finnian, I didn’t mean it like that. I was just so angry,” Elaine said, carefully reviewing her memories. Kaia truly was faultless in her duties.
Seeing his mother finally grasp the consequences of her impulsiveness, Finnian let out a heavy sigh. “You think she’s beneath me, that she climbed the social ladder to marry into our family, and you expect her to spend the rest of her life bowing her head in gratitude. Mom, that just proves you never bothered to understand who she is.”
It was as if a knot in Elaine’s chest had been forcefully untangled, yet a bitter reluctance remained. “She was doing perfectly fine before, why does she suddenly want out now? And the things she was saying… she actually claimed that the one you love is Noelle, that the two of you have some inappropriate relationship. I lost my mind with rage and threw my coffee at her…”
“What?” Finnian’s scalp practically exploded. His mother had thrown coffee on Kaia?
Elaine awkwardly avoided her son’s piercing gaze, muttering defensively, “She was the one spouting nonsense first! You and Noelle are strictly family. For her to say something like that is a massive insult to both of you. If that rumor got out, how would Noelle even show her face? She’s pregnant right now, and I will not let anyone stress her out.”
Finnian stiffened. In that moment, his mind went completely blank, incapable of processing a single thought.
Seeing her son’s dark, brooding expression, Elaine shifted on the sofa. Her lips moved as if she wanted to say something, but she swallowed the words.
Suddenly, she felt deeply resentful. She had come here to convince her son to finalize the divorce so Kaia couldn’t lord her superiority over them anymore.
Instead, she ended up getting lectured. She felt incredibly wronged.
She knew Kaia was critical to Aethelstan and Veridian Future, but it wasn’t like she worked for free. Kaia pulled in a massive salary, held equity dividends, and retained all her patents. She had taken plenty of benefits for herself.
After a long, suffocating silence, Finnian stood up and walked to the window, turning his back to her. “Mom, I know you were trying to look out for me, but stay out of my business with Kaia from now on.”
Elaine slowly looked up at her son’s lonely silhouette. Her heart ached, but she felt entirely helpless. “You’re my son, how can I just sit back and watch you-”
“Mom, I will handle my relationship with her myself. And as for what she said, don’t believe it. Noelle and I have always been family. Kaia completely misunderstood.” He turned his head, his tone a severe warning.
Elaine huffed indignantly. “Of course I don’t believe it. Noelle used to be your sister–in–law. If a man got involved with his brother’s widow, it would be a massive scandal. I wouldn’t be able to show my face in public. Even if Kaia wants a divorce, she can’t use something like that as an excuse. You need to talk some sense into her.”
Finnian’s face tightened as if he had just been lashed with a whip. His voice was rigid. “I know. Just

go home.”
Elaine stood up, casting one last glance at her son before sighing. “Noelle invited you over for dinner, and you didn’t come. Are you keeping your distance from her just because Kaia got in your head?”
Hearing this, a storm of emotions flashed across Finnian’s face, but he forced his voice to remain steady. “No. Work has just been incredibly demanding lately.”
“Fine, just don’t let it ruin the family’s harmony. Kaia is such a troublemaker. She’s leaving anyway, yet she’s still trying to drive a wedge between you and Noelle. That’s just malicious.” Elaine still felt irritated, convinced that Kaia was using Noelle as a scapegoat for the divorce.
“Mom, some things I did in the past caused a misunderstanding. Just trust me on this,” Finnian replied. He couldn’t possibly explain the nuances of it right now. As long as his mother trusted him, that was enough. As for the outside rumors… he would make sure they were silenced.
