Finnian handed her his pen. Kaia took it, looked down, and signed her name with swift precision. Then, she slid the form over to him, placing the pen on top.
Her movements were crisp and efficient, as if she were signing a standard business contract.
Finnian felt as though someone had carved a massive, jagged cross into his heart. He couldn’t even describe the bitter taste in his mouth.
He glanced sideways at Kaia. Her oversized sunglasses concealed nearly half her face, hiding her eyes and masking her emotions. All he could see were her rosy lips pressed into a tight, emotionless line.
Finnian seemed to have run out of excuses. He leaned over and signed his name.
While the paperwork was being processed, Kaia sat in a nearby chair, waiting in silence.
Finnian walked over and sat down beside her. Everyone around them was staring because they were such a striking pair. The man was tall, strikingly handsome, young, and carried an air of extraordinary distinction. The woman boasted stunning curves and long hair as black and smooth as silk, tied back simply but exuding an elegant, untouchable grace.
If a couple this perfect couldn’t find even a shred of happiness in marriage, what hope was there for ordinary people?
Kaia remained silent, waiting without a single word.
Finnian turned his face toward her, hesitating as if he wanted to speak, but ultimately saying nothing.
The clerk handed over the stamped booklets. “Your certificates are ready.”
Kaia quickly stood up, took the one belonging to her, and slipped it into her folder. Finnian reached out for his copy and followed her out of the lobby.
The sunlight in the hallway felt even warmer, but neither of them spoke. Kaia walked briskly, as if she had urgent business to attend to. Finnian lagged a half–step behind, his long legs feeling strangely rigid.
Halfway down the steps outside, Kaia pulled out the green certificate, opened it, glanced at it, and put it back.
Standing on the steps behind her, Finnian watched her. It felt as if she had checked the certificate just to make sure the clerk hadn’t made a mistake and denied her the divorce. She was confirming her freedom.
A sudden, suffocating lump formed in his throat. Was she really that terrified the divorce wouldn’t go through?
When Kaia reached the bottom step, she turned around to face the man behind her. “Finnian, from now on, we can communicate over the phone regarding Brynlee. Unless it’s an emergency where she needs your direct care or attention, there’s no need for us to see each other.”
Finnian looked down at her. Beneath the oversized sunglasses, her features looked delicate and

refined. In the sunlight, her luminous skin seemed to glow. For the first time, he found himself seeing her beauty in an entirely new light.
“Kaia…”
She cut him off. “Thank you for these past seven years, and thank the Sanders family as well. We’re done here.”
With that, Kaia turned and strode purposefully toward the parking lot.
Finnian froze on the steps. In that moment, a wave of inexplicable panic washed over him. It felt like something vital had vanished, and he couldn’t grasp it no matter how hard he tried.
