For a few seconds, Nora simply stared at Kael.
Then, without warning, she started laughing.
Kael frowned, completely unsure of what was happening.
He could not tell whether laughter was simply her way of reacting to uncomfortable situations or if she thought the entire thing was ridiculous. For a brief moment, he even wondered whether she was laughing at him.
Nora covered her mouth with one hand and tried to calm herself, but the more she thought about it, the stranger the situation became.
Of all the women Kael could have fallen in love with, it had to be Jessica, her twin sister.
The same Jessica who treated romantic relationships as though they were a distraction from the only thing that truly mattered to her.
Games.
When Nora finally stopped laughing, she leaned back in her chair and looked at Kael with clear disbelief.
“Wow,” she said slowly. “Seriously, wow.”
Kael continued watching her.
“You mean that out of every woman in this world, you fell in love with my sister?”
“Yes.”
“The same sister who is clearly in love with only one thing in her life?”
Kael raised one eyebrow.
Nora smiled. “Gaming.”
Kael almost smiled too, but her next question made him serious again.
“Are you even sure she likes you the way you like her?”
Kael did not answer immediately.
Not because he could not think of anything to say, but because Nora’s question was fair.
He knew how he felt about Jessica. He had known for years, from the first strange encounter that brought her into his life, she had remained in his mind, even when he did not know her name or whether he would ever see her again.
But Jessica had never clearly told him that she felt the same way.
“I think she does,” he finally replied.
Nora crossed her arms over her chest and studied him. “You think?”
Kael gave her a patient look. “She has not said it directly.”
“That is what I expected.”
“What does that mean?”
“The sister I know is not the type to fall in love easily, and even if she does, she might not understand what is happening until someone forces her to face it.”
Kael listened carefully.
Nora’s tone was no longer bitter or defensive.
She was speaking honestly.
“She has always cared more about her career than relationships,” Nora continued. “When we were younger, most girls were already talking about love, marriage, and the kind of men they wanted, but Jessica only wanted to compete, win, and prove herself.”
“She is passionate.”
“She is stubborn.”
Kael smiled slightly. “That too.”
Nora shook her head. “If you truly love her, then you need to have a proper conversation with her. Do not assume she understands your feelings simply because you think she should.”
“I know.”
“And do not expect her to suddenly become soft and romantic.”
Nora looked at him for a moment.
Then she smiled.
Perhaps Kael truly did understand Jessica better than she expected.
“I think you may actually be serious,” Nora said.
“I am.”
She looked down briefly, allowing herself one final moment to accept the truth.
She truly liked Kael.
Part of her had hoped that his invitation to meet the family would become the beginning of something more between them.
It hurt to know that she had misunderstood him.
But the pain did not make her hate him, and it certainly did not make her hate Jessica.
Kael never promised her love.
He never asked her to wait for him.
She simply built a possibility around their friendship and allowed herself to hope.
That mistake belonged to both of them, but it did not have to become something ugly.
Nora raised her eyes again. “If she loves you too, then I will be happy for both of you.”
