Sean’s eyes scanned the crowd, searching for his little ancestor.
"I was told Horizon Research Institute’s research group was entering as a team. So why don’t I see the top-ranked student?"
The school leaders of both sides were seated just behind the judges.
Quartz hurried forward, rubbing his bald head nervously. "Heavyweight players are reserved as trump cards. They’ll only appear at the end." He dared not reveal that First High’s number one was suspected of cheating—Horizon Research Institute’s impression of their best student had to stay spotless.
He had just finished his explanation and was about to signal someone to fetch Serena when she appeared on her own, holding a cup of shaved ice.
Not only was she out of step with the others on stage in their formal attire, no one had even bothered to put makeup on her. As she approached, members of the student council blocked her path.
One of them pointed with smug disdain toward the unseen substitute bench. "That’s where you belong."
In that instant, both Sean’s and Jackson’s expressions darkened to a terrifying degree.
Sitting closest, Darren swore the air dropped several degrees colder. He shivered, breaking into a nervous sweat.
Quartz stiffly forced a smile, struggling to salvage First High’s dignity. "Our hidden trump card."
Sean and Jackson: Heh.
Sean finally understood why the Gu family had been insistent on bringing their little ancestor home. If this was how the outside world treated her, it was no wonder. Didn’t these people realize? Without her, everything they wore, ate, and enjoyed could vanish overnight.
Rage burned in him, but Serena remained perfectly calm. She sipped her shaved ice and murmured, "Needs a beating."
The student council member’s face twisted.
He’d just been threatened in public.
He wanted to snap back, but before the words formed, something flew out of nowhere, smacking against his front tooth with a crack. Pain numbed his lip, blood poured, and his tooth snapped clean.
Thankfully, someone nearby caught him before he collapsed completely.
At the judges’ table, Sean quietly pulled out his phone, snapping a candid shot of his little ancestor. Just seeing her soft cheeks soothed away the fury burning inside him.
Elsewhere in the venue, Sebastian and Zayden had taken their seats in the corner.
"You’re really all right?" Zayden asked.
The air in the gym was stale, thick with the mixed scents of countless females. Could his boss handle that?
