When The Luna Broke Her Chains
Chapter 100 First Day Of Suncrest

I’m sure I only imagined it happening, because why would Knox want to meet me? What more could he have to say? Unless… Davina told him how I threatened her in the library to reveal their secret. So he wants to make sure I shut up…? That has to be it, right?
Nothing makes sense, and everything feels overwhelming. The hunger makes it all worse.
“No,” I hear myself utter the word. “I didn’t imagine it. Iver was really here.”
Because Oriel came to me after, with a wicked smile on her face. Iver must’ve known Oriel was eavesdropping on the conversation, which was why he then suddenly mentioned Vera. Knox wanted to talk about Vera–he insisted very deliberately. Or maybe he truly does want to talk about Vera. Doesn’t matter. I told Iver I didn’t want to meet the Prince, and surprisingly, Iver didn’t argue further.
“I’ll win without your help,” Oriel had said, and then just before leaving, she had declared, “When I become Queen, I’ll make sure you regret everything.”
I wanted to tell her she was delusional. That she’d never become Knox’s Queen. I should’ve told her, but for some reason not clear to me, I stayed quiet. Maybe I want to experience the satisfaction of seeing her try hard to win a game that’s been rigged since the beginning and lose miserably.
I turn to the other side, trying to ignore the rumble my stomach produces, when something dark and thick catches my eye–tucked into the shelf built within the wall. I frown and push myself up with all the strength I can gather, walking over slowly before reaching for it.
It’s a book. My fingers tighten around it immediately, and I know at once that it’s the book Knox left for me with the librarian. But how did it get here?
There’s only one answer. “Vera…”
A strange warmth settles in my chest. We’re connected. We’ve been connected from the start.

I open the book, pulling the flickering lamp closer, letting the scant light hover over the cover with a faded title–when suddenly, a knock startles me. I quickly shove the book under my pillow just as the door opens.
Astrid steps in, slow and careful. “You’re not ready?” she asks, a frown forming on her face. “The trial is about to begin.”
“I’m not going,” I tell her, straightening and swallowing the lump in my throat.
She pauses before walking over, her gaze softening as she takes me in. “Xena… are you alright?”
“I’m fine.”
She looks like she doesn’t believe me. She almost says something else, but stops. “Your family is here,” she says instead.
I stare at her. This isn’t news to me; I’ve known it for a while–enough to have stopped caring, but now it’s like having salt sprinkled into a wound I believed had closed.
“Your parents, and your brother, too,” she adds carefully “I thought you should know.”
“They’re not my family.” I say flatly.

She blinks. “What?”
“I’m adopted,” I tell her. “And they don’t care about me. They never have.”
Her expression shifts, shock settling in. “Oh…”
“Yeah.” I say. “So you don’t have to look at me like that.”
She hesitates, sitting meekly on the edge of my narrow bed, staring at her folded hands resting in her lap. “I saw them earlier… they were celebrating.”
