Chapter 27 Lured And Masterminded

Long after Morrin has left, Davina’s heart is still racing with the thought of what’s coming next. She doesn’t feel prepared–doesn’t feel the slightest bit of confidence that this is something she can get through.

How could things get so bad so fast?

Davina abandons her juniors without a word.

They are mid–conversation when she turns and walks away. Someone calls her name—Sora, maybe—but Davina doesn’t stop. She doesn’t look back. Now is not the time to care what they think, what they whisper, or how it looks.

Nothing matters except reaching Cassian.

The charm is warm against her skin, pulsing faintly as she grips it in her palm. It pulls her through endlessly stretching corridors, turns that nearly scare her, and stairs that threaten to trip her.

She finds him near the solar, speaking with a beta.

Cassian turns at once when he senses her. His brows knit together in surprise, then he offers a smile. Davina-”

We need to talk,” she says, not hiding her urgency. “Alone.”

The beta hesitates, eyes flicking between them.

Davina wishes she could care what he thinks of them right now.

She gives him a look sharp enough to cut. “Now.”

Cassian exhales, his shoulders lifting as he nods. “Leave us.”

The beta stiffens but obeys. The door shuts behind them with a heavy thud.

The moment they’re alone, Davina rounds on Cassian. “She knows.”

Cassian blinks. “Who?”

“Morrin,” Davina snaps. “She knows.”

“What do you mean? About us? Why, because she gave you a look you thought was suspicious” He scoffs waving a hand. “You’re overreacting, sweetheart. I just asked you to stay another day. It’s not that big of a

deal.”

“I’m not overreacting,” Davina says sharply. “She confronted me. She threatenest a petition to the Mom

Guild.”

That gets his attention.

“A petition?” he repeats slowly.

“Yes.” Davina says. “From a chief healer. An alumnus of the Guild. Do you have any idea what that means?”

Cassian leans back against the table, crossing his arms. “Guild politics. Empty threats.”

Davina gives out humorless laugh. “You’re a fool.”

His eyes darken. “Watch your mouth, darling.”

“You don’t understand how closely they investigate petitions,” she says, stepping closer. “Especially ones that come from respected authorities. Especially about broken oaths of celibacy. Morrin isn’t some hysterical priestess. And the Guild investigators are precise and… methodical. They know exactly what questions to ask.”

Cassian’s jaw tightens. “Did she see us?”

“She didn’t say,” Davina snaps. “Which is worse. She said she could test me.”

Cassian straightens. “Test you how?”

Davina clenches her fists. Her nails bite into her palms. “Don’t make me say it.”

His face hardens as the truth settles. “Fuck.”

“Yes,” Davina hisses. “Now it finally reaches that thick skull of yours.”

He drags a hand through his hair. “Alright. Alright. We’ll handle it.”

“How?” she demands. “If you confront her, you confirm suspicion. If I refuse, the Guild intervenes.”

Cassian exhales sharply. “Then what do you suggest?”

Davina’s lips curl. “Xena.”

Cassian looks up. “What?”

“She did this,” Davina says. “Who else? She planted the idea in my head. She forced me to confront you And of course, we know what happens if we’re in a closed room. She lured us. And somehow Morrin knew

to be there,”

“Morrin saw us, you think?” Cassian scoffs. “And you think Xena masterminded this?”

“Yes,” Davina snaps. “Because she knows. She knows what I did that night”

Cassian’s expression shifts–annoyance flickering into something sharper, “She doesn’t know anything And even if she did, she doesn’t have the spine.”

Davina’s laugh comes out brittle. “She didn’t used to. But something’s changed”

Cassian clicks his tongue. “You were too kind to her at Crescent Ash.”

Davina’s s eyes flash. “And you showed far too much concern for your wounded wife.

Davina exhales slowly. “Yes. And now we fix it.”

Cassian hesitates, then says casually, “She asked me for Severance.”

Davina freezes. “She what?”

“She clearly wants separation,” he says.

Davina stares. “Severance?” Her voice rises. “That’s suicide. She won’t survive it without her wolf.”

“She knows that,” Cassian replies.

Davina’s mind races. “Then why would she-”

“Because she’s desperate,” Cassian says flatly.

Davina swallows. “You could break the bond.”

Cassian laughs. “Don’t be ridiculous.”

‘Why not?” Davina snaps. “You have that authority.”

I can’t,” he says sharply.

Her eyes narrow. “Or you won’t?”

His silence is answer enough. A wave of rage crashes through her. “Is this your way of telling me you’ve been fucking her?”

Cassian’s lips twist. “Please, don’t go there. Trust me, I have no interest in her.”

‘Well, what about that healer? I swear to the Goddess, Cassian, I could burn this keep to the ground with just one word,” Davina hisses.

He steps closer. “The Moonborne Gathering is approaching. The Lycan King expects stability. No separations. No drama.”

“So you trap me?” she snaps. “You risk my life for your reputation? Because of course this is her way of retaliating because you refused her. If you let her go, she wouldn’t have gone to Mortin

Cassian shrugs. “I thought you wanted to break her. Use her. Torture her when you returned

He smirks.

Davina slaps his chest. Hard. “What did I just tell you?”

His smile fades.

“The Guild will destroy me if that petition goes through,” she says. “They will dig. They will find our everything. And if Xena reveals what happened to her that night-

She steps closer. “You’re a man. An Alpha. You might survive this. I won’t. And if I fall, I’ll drag you with me.”

Cassian grabs her chin without warning, forcing her to look at him. His grip is hard. “How dare you threaten me, darling?” he murmurs. “Are you trying to turn me on this early in the day?”

Davina sends a sharp pain through his skull with a click of her fingers.

Cassian staggers back with a growl.

She lowers her hand, breath sharp. “Do something,” she says coldly. “Anything.”

He stares at her, stunned.

“Save me,” she continues. “And make Xena pay for this. If you won’t grant her separation,” Davina says, voice steady, “then find another way to get rid of her.”

She turns for the door.

“And Cassian?” she adds without looking back. “Find out what Morrin wants. Everyone values something more than truth.”

She leaves him standing there, bare feet slapping against stone, fury and fear burning through her veins.

For the first time, Davina doesn’t feel in control. And that terrifies her.
