Chapter 59 Dearest Sister

Davina spends most of the day failing to find Xena.

Every time she turns a corner with purpose, a Guild summons intercepts her. A request to verify sigils. A consultation about ritual spacing and other menial tasks that annoy her.

She complies. She always does. But she doesn’t miss the looks.

They come from women she trained beside. From seniors who once praised her discipline. From juniors who lower their eyes too late. By now, everyone knows she has entered the Luna Choosing.

Jealousy, she thinks distantly, signing her name beneath another ledger.

She never imagined staying with the Guild beyond her servitude. The idea used to itch under her skin- being useful, never significant. That was the rule of the world. If you weren’t born royal, you had to be exceptional.

She was born cursed.

She hid it. She endured. And when the moment came, she turned the tide.

The thought of her parents surfaces unbiddenhow different things might have been if she had been the roblem child instead of Xena. Davina shakes it off. Sentiment is a distraction. Ahead of her lies a path she can see clearly now, leading straight to Aurelune’s throne, to Prince Knox’s side. It is the highest power

vailable to a woman like her in this place.

She will take it.

Davina.

Seraphel finds her just after midday, drawing her aside near a column carved with old lunar scripture.

Seraphel says quietly. I just wanted to confirm you signed your name.

Davina inclines her head. As required.”

There arecomplications,Seraphel continues. Two other Guild women have petitioned to join. Their baths end soon. Refusing them would require explanation.”

Davina’s jaw tightens. And explanation isinconvenient.

Yes.” Seraphel exhales. We trust few with the truth, especially when the crown’s reputation is at stake. They will be allowed to participate.

But they won’t matter,” Davina says, forcing a sad touch to her voice.

Seraphel studies her. The trials will be judged by the crown and the Guild. The King. Princess Aria. The old Wolf Queen. And the elders. The scores will be skewed. They will favor you.

Davina nods, acknowledging what she already knows.

It weighs on you, doesn’t it?she asks softly, trying to make herself look concerned about truth and being honest. Thisdeception.”

Seraphel closes her eyes briefly. I serve the Guild and the crown. Truth comes second.

I pray for the Goddess’s mercy every night,Davina says.

Seraphel smiles, satisfied.

Later, leaving the Guild hall, Davina’s body achesan unwelcome reminder of overexertion and the night before. She should not ache. She has alpha blood. She is moonblessed. The flicker of fear that follows is swiftly crushed when she spots Prince Knox ahead, walking with his beta.

She steps into their path.

The beta slows. Knox doesn’t see her until she’s directly before him.

Davina bows lowlow enough to let the unapproved neck cut of her robes do its workthen rises into a smile she has honed for years. Your Highness, she says. I hope you’re well.”

Knox frowns. Why wouldn’t I be?

She lets out a light laugh. I intended to be polite.”

He studies her for a second, then his brow furrows. Right. You’rethe Guild woman.

Her smile tightens when she realizes he failed to recognize her. Davina.

Yes.” He glances past her. What do you need?

I only wished to greet you,she says softly. Perhaps speak later?

He exhales, already irritated. You’ve interrupted me.”

Oh,” she says, biting her lip. I’m sorry.

You have,” he confirms, stepping aside. Excuse me.

He walks past her. The beta follows without looking back.

Davina stands there for a heartbeat too long, heat crawling up her neck.

She straightens. She remembers how gently he spoke to Xena at the Bloodwake Hunt. How patiently. How attentively.

She will change that. She turns toward the prince’s towerknowing that’s where she’ll find Xena.

Xena finds her before she can put in any more effort.

She’s walking with the healer, both cloaked, looking too easy in each other’s company.

Davina moves on instinct, gripping Xena’s arm hard enough to stop her.

Be careful, she says lowly. Don’t step where you don’t belong.”

Xena stiffens. Davina-

Remember what you are, dearest sister,Davina continues. No one will believe you, not over me. You have a title only because Cassian gave you one.”

The healer looks startled but stays silent.

Without it,Davina says, snapping, you’re nothing. Literally nothing. Weak. Pathetic. You wouldn’t even be here in this palace. Much less have the privilege to live in the Prince’s tower.

Xena’s lower lip trembles. Something flashes in her eyes that Davina dislikes. The woman who once lowered her head at Davina’s presence, now dares to meet her eyes.

Davina releases her and wipes her hand against her robe. Filthy. Wolfless.”

Davina.” Xena lifts her chin higher. You sound afraid, she says quietly. Do I scare you that much? You felt the need to come here and threaten me in person? I haven’t even done anything yet.A smirk forms on her face. You just confirmed everything,Xena continues. I’m sure the prince would love to hear your stories.

She turns and strides away.

Davina watches her go, fury tightening her chest.

Then she sees Xena stop near the beta who was by Knox’s side minutes ago.

Davina taps into her wolf’s ability to eavesdrop on the conversation.

Excuse me,” Xena says politely. May we go into the forest tonight? To shift.

The beta hesitates. “You?

My healer,Xena clarifies. She needs to shift.

The beta glances toward the healer, then nods, Certainly, You needn’t ask permission to leave the palace, Luna Xena.

Thank you.”

They walk away together.

Davina remains still. Then she smiles.

A plan begins to take shape in her mind: precise, cruel, and irreversible.

And for the first time that day, she feels no ache at all.
