For a heartbeat, shock clouds her sharp featuresand then Cassian does the same, his confidence evaporating the instant he realizes he’s not alone in the room with Davina. His gaze snaps between the two women, calculating.

Davina doesn’t allow herself even a breath. Alpha Cassian, she says, voice breathless, turning toward him with practiced gravity. Are you here to ask about Xena?

She widens her eyes just enough. A warning. A plea. Play along.

Yesyes, of course,Cassian answers too quick.

Davina’s jaw tightens.

and there’s no real worry in his voice.

She drops her mental shields for half a second and sl

the into him through the bond.

Xena was attacked in the woods. She nearly died. 49

His spine straightens.

anic.

Is she alright?he asks, suddenly loud and performative. I came the moment I heard.

Davina almost rolls her eyes. She turns to Seraphel. This is Xena’s husband. Alpha Cassian.

Seraphel’s expression hardens instantly. Then you should be at

wife’s side.

Cassian opens his mouth.

And it is mannerless,” Seraphel continues sharply, to enter a Guild woman’s chamber without knocking.

Davina swallows. Mistress Seraphelhe’s family. And a longtime friend. Please excuse him.”

He’s not a child,Seraphel snaps. She looks directly at Cassian now. You do not enter any woman’s chamber unannounced. Family or not.

Cassian bristles.

Davina’s stomach drops. Idiot. Did he really come here for sex? Again?

Seraphel turns back to Davina. You know the decorum, Davina. Stick to it. I will not hear that guards saw a man entering your chamber at night.”

Yes, Mistress Seraphel,Davina says obediently.

Seraphel strides out, then stops at the threshold. Why is he still inside? I’m going to see Xena- if you’re so curious about her condition, follow me.

Cassian scoff’s and turns, following her with visible reluctance. The door shuts. Davina exhales shakilythen stiffens as Cassian’s voice slips into her head.

Hide me. Bring me back in ten minutes.’

Her teeth grind. She stalks to the bed and sinks down hard, heart hammering. Then she remembers the folding screen.

Fuck.

She crosses the room and dismantles the remnants of the shadow spellburned sigils, residue, and other unused ingredients. It takes longer than she wants. Too long.

When she cloaks Cassian and lets him back in, nearly an hour has passed.

But luckily, during all this time, she has welcomed no guards, heard no summons.

Good, she thinks grimly. Xena hasn’t spoken. And if Knox’s healing trapped the poison inside her bloodthen the decay will continue. Slow. Quiet enough that no one will suspect. Inevitable. Unless Seraphel finds a way to extract it from her.

Dread coils in her gut.

She feels Cassian’s presence get closer and closer before he materializes behind her, appearing furious.

What are you hiding from me?he snarls, hand closing around her throat.

Panic flares inside her, and is quickly replaced by rage.

Davina flings him across the room with a snap of her wrist. He slams into the wall and collapses in a heap.

How dare you,” she hisses.

He’s up in seconds, stalking toward her again. She considers boiling his blood. Bursting vessels. Ending this.

I can’t sense you,he says, wildeyed. You’re shielded. You’re angry all the time unless we’re fucking. What is going on, Davina?

You’re paranoid,she snaps.

He laughs, hollow and ugly. Paranoid? You killed Morrin. Maybe the guilt’s finally eating you.

Her eyes widen. She gestures sharply, scaling the room. You watch your mouth!she snarls. The walls listen!

He rakes a hand through his hair. And what did you do to Xena? I saw her. She looked almost dead. And the princehe was there like he cared. What the fuck is happening?

I don’t know either!Davina shouts. You should’ve killed the wolf when you had the chance and blamed her. Knox would’ve disposed of her then.

Cassian stops pacing. You tried again. You used the shadow.

She stares at him.

Why are you acting so recklessly?he demands. What are you so afraid of? Morrin is gone. She didn’t have to die so horriblyI tried to stop you, but did it anyway.”

you

Her voice drops to a growl. Who do you think told Morrin about us? Xena did. What makes you think she won’t tell another soul? What if she tells the prince? Considering how close they’re getting.

He scoffs. Xena doesn’t have the spine.

Davina tilts her head. Doesn’t she?

Silence answers her instead of words.

Have you spoken to her lately?she presses. She has an attitude now. With the prince favoring her because of that damned wolf.”

Cassian doesn’t answer, but his face falls.

Davina clicks her tongue. You have, haven’t you? She’s not scared anymore. She threatened me earlier tonight. I didn’t know what else to do. You’re useless anyway, so I thought I’d get rid of her like I did Morrin. But somehow Knox was therehe saved her. And he healed her.

Cassian closes the distance between them. He cups her face, thumbs warm against her jaw, confidence settling back into him now that anger has burned itself out.

Xena may feel powerful now,” he says softly, assuring, but it won’t last. The prince will lose interest.” His mouth curves in something close to a smile. She has nothing to offer him. She’s not even pretty like you.

What’s he going to do,Cassian continues, almost amused, make her his queen because she cared for a wolf?

She draws in a slow breath, steadying herself.

He doesn’t know. He can’t know.

Davina will be queen. That truth sits deep and solid inside her, immovable as bone.

She rolls her eyes instead. Don’t flatter me.

Cassian shakes his head and kisses her, hard enough that it borders on bruising. His hands anchor her in place, familiar, possessive in every sense.

Whatever happens,he murmurs against her mouth, we’ll deal with it. Like we always have. All these years. He presses his forehead to hers. You and me, Davina. We’re a team.

Her spine stiffens.

There are no secrets between us,he continues, voice low and confident. I know every rotten thing you’ve done. Everything you did to Xena.He pauses for a moment, studying her gaze, as if trying to read through or make her bend. I know how you took her wolf when you realized she was blessed. How you made her power yours. It is the worst sin in the Goddess’s eyes.

Her pulse jumps, sharp and angry at the reminder. She has always tried to hide that truth from herself. She has forced herself to believe, to think that the power was always hers.

I haven’t told a soul,” Cassian says. I never will. Only I know you. Every part of you.His hand slides to her waist. And when this is overwhen you’re free of that oathI’ll claim you. Openly. I’ll make you mine.

Davina turns away before her face can betray her.

I want Xena to shut up,she says distantly. With Knox watching her, I can’t try anything again. Not now.” She exhales. So we wait.”

Cassian nods without hesitation. I’ll make sure she says nothing. To anyone.

She studies him for a moment, measuring the promise.

I’ll do anything you say, sweetheart,he adds. Anything.

Davina finally lets out a breath.

Just for a moment, she allows herself to relax. Just for a moment.
