Chapter 75 What He Can’t Escape

A week has passed, and I’ve spent all of it in the training yard.

The sand is cold under my bare feet as I circle the pit, breathing steadily, watching the gamma fighters move around me–three of them this time, all fast, all experienced, and waiting for the first mistake.

I don’t make mistakes often, though. I feint left, draw one in, use his momentum against him, and take him down hard, then pivot before the second can close the distance, sweeping his legs and driving my elbow into his shoulder as he hits the sand.

The third lasts longer because he is smarter and quicker than the others, but he hesitates once–just once -and that’s enough. I hook his arm, twist, and put him flat on his back with my knee at his chest.

“Again,” I say, already moving. “This time, actually try to hurt me. Try to draw blood.”

They straighten, shoulders squaring, breaths drawn–eager to fight tough. But I decide to play. I annoy them, simply brushing past, slipping out from under them. Growls and grunts are thrown at me. A few snickers too. But it bores me quickly, and I end it in the next few seconds.

“That’s it,” I say. “Clear the pit.”

They leave quickly, bowing one after the other, uttering in farewell, “Your Highness.”

For a long time, it’s just me and my thoughts, and it’s not much later when I realize I’m breathing too

hard.

‘You’ve lost it,‘ Teo says dryly.

“Shut up,” I growl under my breath.

I tell myself I’ve been and I’ve spent all my time and energy because of my father. Because of the things he said to me and the anger that erupted needed somewhere to go. I tell myself that it’s not because I haven’t seen Xena. That I shouldn’t see Xena.

Once, we crossed paths in the west corridor of the Prince’s tower. She met my eyes and slowed like she wanted to talk. But I didn’t stop. I realize how rude it was only after I’d passed her, and by then it was too late to turn back.

That day, I’d come so close to losing my control and just barging into her chamber–thus giving my father another chance to get annoyed at me.

Iver approaches and hands me a cloth. “That was quick, Prince. I see that you might finally be bored with this way of spending your time. In any case, every day you just played with them. You can fight twenty of our best fighters at once and get them down to the ground in less than a minute.”

I ignore the undertone. Iver is allowed to taunt me. And Teo, besides him. And maybe Aria, too. If I had to be serious all the time, life would be too miserable.

“The Luna Choosing Trial starts tomorrow, Your Highness,” Iver adds after a hesitated pause when I glance

“You don’t,” she says, realizing it herself in that moment. “But she’s concerned about you. And about what this is going to be–between the two of you, I mean. I want her to believe you care nothing for her sister.”

I stare at her. “Why?”

“Because I don’t know what Xena has told you,” she says. “But it appears she knows about your mess”

“She does,” I murmur. “I told her.”

“Why do you trust her?” Seraphel asks, a hint of sharpness to her voice.
