Chapter 81 What I No Longer Owe Him
[XENA]
Cassian turns his head slowly, and I feel his gaze on me, but I don’t look back right away.
He is a stranger now.

The thought settles with an unexpected calm. About a month ago, I was praying to the Moon Goddess every night, begging for my lunar energy to stabilize. Begging to be worthy. To carry a child for him. I was devoted and desperate. I thought I loved him and that he loved me back. I was willing to swallow poison, humiliation, fear–anything–if it meant I could give him what he wanted.
What he wanted.
Now, when I finally glance at him, the face I once thought beautiful makes my stomach curl. His mouth. His eyes. The familiar angles I memorized in the dark.
All of it disgusts me.
Seraphel’s voice continues to echo through the hall, reading name after name. The chosen women step forward one by one, bowing, radiant and trembling at the same time.
Cassian leans closer. “Did you ask the Prince?” he murmurs, his voice low and impatient.
“Ask him what?” I whisper back.
“Better quarters for me, my mother, and my sister,” he says sharply. “What’s taking so long? I can’t keep staying in that Moon–damned hole.”
Fury surges hot through my veins, slamming straight into my chest. I clench my jaw so hard my teeth ache.
Is he serious? Of course he is.
I think of that night when the shadow nearly sent me to the Goddess–him entering the chamber with Seraphel, his eyes sliding right past me, as if I were furniture–focusing on Knox instead, in a futile attempt to charm him. I hadn’t expected anything from Cassian then. I shouldn’t expect anything now.
But this? If you were going to ignore me, why ask this of me now?
I turn my head slowly, meeting his gaze. “You’re asking something of me?”
His eyes narrow. “I don’t like your tone, Xena,” he warns.
“You want me to do something for you, Cassian?” I continue softly. “Is that what this is?”
dinb
“Stop acting stupid,” he hisses under his breath. “This isn’t the first time I’m telling you. Wait… did you lose your memories that night?”
I nearly snicker, but hold myself back when my gaze instinctively finds Knox, and disappointment ignites
when I find his attention focused elsewhere.

“Why don’t you ask the Prince yourself?” I whisper, jaw clenched. “Open your eyes, Cassian. You may be an Alpha, but what exactly have you done to earn his favor?”
His nostrils flare, a muscle twitching in his jaw.
“You should be grateful,” I add. “If you had ordered the wolf to be executed, like Varek wanted, only the Goddess knows what the Prince would’ve done with you.”
His shoulders stiffen, lips parting slightly in shock and realization.
“And besides,” I say lightly, tilting my head, “your mate just got chosen for the Trials. Did she tell you she was participating?”
He shakes his head, but the hesitation’s evident in his eyes. “She didn’t sign up willingly. The Moon Guild wanted her to.”
I nod.
