Chapter 83 Ambition’s Price
Davina mirrors his smile, quickly dropping into the act of pretending to be familial. “Thank you, Alpha Cassian. You’re very kind.”
The guard watches them closely, and it adds fuel to her already burning anger.
Davina’s jaw tightens. She fists her hands and holds back a groan. Finally–finally–she feels it: a spark.
Davina doesn’t hesitate a moment longer. She redirects it instantly, snapping it toward the guard. His eyes glaze over, milky and unfocused. He sways, then stills.
Cassian stiflens. “He-”
“He won’t remember anything,” Davina cuts in. She turns on Cassian, fury blazing. “What the fuck have you done?”
He blinks, “What?”
“How is her lunar energy stable?” she demands. “You said she was being kept poisoned.”
“I did!” he snaps. “She still is!”
“Then how?” Davina hisses. “I lost control tonight. That’s why I couldn’t cloak you. If Xena is gaining her wolf-”
“That’s not possible,” Cassian interrupts sharply. “She can’t.” He pauses for a moment, and when he speaks again, the fear is evident in his voice: “It risks everything.”
“It does,” Davina says coldly. “So make sure she doesn’t. If she gets any stronger, she’ll snatch her wolf back. I can feel it reaching out to her already! I’ll have nothing left, Cassian. No powers.”
“That would mean,” he says slowly after assessing her words, “you could return earlier. From the Guild. They won’t keep you if you offer nothing.”
Davina laughs, sharp and disbelieving. “What are you even saying? I want my powers. I want to keep
them.”
“They’re not yours,” Cassian corrects calmly. “They’re Xena’s.”
He crosses the room, picks up the fallen chalice, and pours himself wine. “I’m going to file a request to get my marriage to Xena annulled,” he declares, shocking her. “I’ll save her the humiliation of dying a horrible. death by claiming Severance.”
“Why would you do that now?” Davina snaps, dropping her hands.
“I’m tired of her. She’s started answering back. And she knows for certain about us.”
Davina snickers. “Well, happy realization. You didn’t believe me when I told you. She told Morrin about us.” Davina paces along, casting one glance at the guard to make sure he’s still dazed. “Why are you being stupid, Cassian? Why would you let Xena go? Ever? And choosing to do it now? It’s going to raise suspicion, Goddess knows that bitch Seraphel already suspects us.”

“I think she looks at everyone like she suspects them of having the worst morals,” Cassian says. “Fuck her. Fuck this damned palace. And the throne.”
Davina exhales, gripping her forehead with her fingers.
“You didn’t look disappointed,” Cassian mumbles, glancing over his shoulder at her. “When you got picked. Were you happy?”
Davina’s throat tightens. “Why would I be happy? I told you I was forced-”
“Were you, sweetheart? Or is that a lie? When did you start lying to me? I know you were a liar, spitting out lies since you started speaking, but between us, I believed, was only honesty. When did that change, Davina?”
She swallows. “I’m not lying to you,” she replies weakly. “I love you, Cassian. You know that. Everything that I do-”
“-is for yourself,” he completes, putting the chalice down as he turns to gaze at her. “Let’s not pretend you aren’t ambitious, Davina. You stole Xena’s powers.”
“Ambition is not a bad thing,” she says in defense. “If I want to get a better future for us, are you going to hate me for it?”
“Future for us? Or for you?”
She closes the distance between them, putting her hands on his chest. “Do you really believe I don’t want you anymore? You’re my mate, Cassian. For Goddess’s sake, I’ve risked it all, letting you into this chamber every night. I break my oath every night that I let you fuck me.”
He considers her words, wrapping his hand around hers and tightening it until she hisses. “You can’t betray me. You know that, right?”
“I don’t want to betray you, Cassian. I’m yours–I’ve always been. I don’t care about Knox. Or the throne,” she emphasizes, but fails to meet his gaze as she says it. “You must believe me.”
When she glances up, Cassian smiles, finally pleased. “Let’s get married as soon as you complete your servitude at the Guild, alright? I can’t wait to see you lose like an idiot at the very first trial. Very unlike you
it’ll be.”
Davina hums, nodding as she places her head over his chest and wraps her arms around him. She grits her teeth to keep from screaming in fury.
He’s threatening her with a sweet smile and loving words–she doesn’t miss noticing that obvious truth.
But… she wants that throne. And as much as Cassian infuriates her, she wants him too. Perhaps she can find a way to keep him around after she marries Knox. She’s learnt there are no limits to what she can do. All she has to do is convince Cassian to accept this.
And… she needs to keep her powers from being taken.
