Over the next few days, Natalie and her dog carefully searched every corner of the mountain.
They came across four deer, perfect for making some venison ravioli later.
And then there were 30 roasted ducks—actually, they were 30 cute ducklings.
During their journey, they ran into a wild boar and, like always, Natalie handled it by firing her submachine gun.
Aside from that, nothing else posed a serious threat.
Maybe it was because they were near the outskirts of the city, so large predators like tigers or lions weren't around—only a few snakes showed up.
But since they had applied clove oil, the snakes kept their distance.
They remained in the mountains for four days and ended up collecting a total of 216 lambs, 38 cattle, four deer, 18 chickens, 33 ducks, 42 rabbits, and two wild boars.
If it hadn't been for Lucky's sharp nose, Natalie would've never found so many animals.
She took nearly everything they came across, leaving only a few foxes and weasels behind.
First, she'd never tasted that kind of meat before. Second, she had a respectful fear of all those old legends and folk tales. Most importantly, she already had enough meat stored away to give herself and her dog a heart problem from eating too much meat.
No need to go killing them over nothing.
What if she tried to kill one of them and it suddenly stands up and says, "Tell me, do I look like a human or spirit?" That would be terrifying.
She used to not believe in things like that, but now that the apocalypse had come and she'd been reborn, nothing felt impossible anymore.
If someone said her life was just a story in a novel, she might just agree.
This world really was full of strange things.
Natalie did a rough sort of all the livestock she'd gathered, but because there were so many, a lot of them—like more than a hundred lambs—were still untouched.
But she decided it was time to head home.
There wasn't much left to gather on the mountain, and if she stayed away too long, there was a chance someone from her neighborhood might sneak into her house and take something. That would be a serious problem.
So, in the afternoon on the fourth day, she called Lucky and got ready to leave the mountain.
Lucky had enjoyed the freedom of the wild for the past few days and didn't want to leave just yet.
She stood still for a moment, tilting her head to look at Natalie.
Then Natalie teased, "Had a good rest these past few days? Don't you miss your cozy little bed back home?"
Lucky hesitated.
Then all of a sudden, Lucky thought about the comfy sofa and her small pink bed at home.
Her expression turned serious. Without hesitation, Lucky darted off downhill.
From the way Lucky reacted, Natalie could already picture what she was saying. "Home sweet home! No treasure could compare to my own sleeping spot. I haven't had a proper nap in days!"
And just like that, they made their way down the mountain quickly and started up the inflatable dinghy to leave the area.
On the mountain, a few foxes silently watched them disappear into the distance.
