Focus on the reality in front of you, not on things that never happened?
Or... things that hadn't happened yet?
Lemira picked up her mug, taking a slow sip of water. "You're right. Thank you guys for being here."
Last night had left her in a mental tailspin.
She had been caught between the horrors of her past life and the shifting realities of her current one.
Janice linked arms with her. "Stop stressing over it. The Langston men are garbage anyway. Even if he's playing nice, it's the bare minimum. They owe you for finding the truth about your parents. Stand your ground and live your own life."
Lemira nodded firmly. "You're exactly right."
Whether Rowan's personality had shifted due to the butterfly effect or not, she would never give him the chance to put her on an operating table again. She was keeping a ten-foot pole between herself and the Langstons.
Having settled the internal debate, she felt a weight lift.
She turned back to Stella. "You really should try the serum. It works."
Janice chimed in. "I have a nasty scar on my arm. Let me test-drive it first and see if it's legit."
Lemira reached out and uncapped the jar herself. No matter what this serum represented, she was rewriting her own history. She would never walk the same doomed path again.
That afternoon, Lemira and Janice headed to class.
On the way, they bumped into a group of Business School students.
Dorian Draven sneered the moment he saw her. "Well, well. Haven't seen you parading around in that sports car lately. Back to driving that tragic little SUV? How boring."
Lemira didn't miss a beat. "I leave the sports car at home so guys like you don't burst a blood vessel out of jealousy."
Dorian's jaw tightened. "You're vicious, you know that? You practically forced Susanna Sinclair to drop out."
Lemira blinked in genuine surprise. "Drop out?"
"Oh, please, don't play dumb," Dorian scoffed. "The Sinclair family is on the verge of bankruptcy and drowning in a murder investigation. Susanna has no face left to show up on campus."
Janice let out a loud, mocking laugh. "That's what she gets! She used to strut around like she owned the place, bullying whoever she wanted. Now that her family's crashing and burning, everyone's kicking her while she's down. Karma's a bitch."
