Lemira lowered her gaze. “I’m not blind—you think I don’t know all that you’ve done?”
Orion seemed a little unsettled by her words.
At that moment, the car came to a stop.
Orion glanced outside, the gentle look on his face fading noticeably. “We’re here,” he said.
Lemira looked out the window. “Did you catch him?”
Orion looked at the person in the front passenger seat, who turned and answered respectfully, “He’s been apprehended. He’s over there.”
Lemira’s heart instantly tightened with anxiety.
She gripped Orion’s hand tightly, visibly nervous. “I wonder if that man has ever had nightmares over these years,” she said.
He killed my parents, yet managed to live his life in hiding all this time!
Orion held her hands in his. “We’ll find out when we question him. Do you want to do it yourself?”
“Of course. If you go, you probably won’t get much out of him.”
Orion’s voice was gentle. “He might act tough, but remember the other man we caught? He’s still holed up in that casino—he’ll talk sooner or later.”
Everyone has their weakness.
“But there’s something odd about Hale,” Lemira went on. “He must know his cousin has been missing for a while, but he’s stayed at the dealership all this time instead of trying to run. Is he really so sure we wouldn’t find him?”
Orion said calmly, “That’s what puzzles me too—unless he never got the money.”
“That can’t be. Wasn’t the money transferred? I’d have thought Hale had it!”
Lemira couldn’t fathom it either. If Hale really didn’t get the money…
Then who did?
When he saw her, he was clearly shocked, then seemed to be weighing his options.
Lemira continued, “Were you surprised to see me? Let me guess—you thought it was the Sinclair family who’d captured you, which is why you demanded to speak with whoever was pulling the strings before you’d say anything.”
He fell silent, refusing to respond.
Lemira walked right up to him. “You know exactly who I am, so drop the silent act. Remember that time you tried to help Evelina—sending someone to the Langston Estate to kill the old butler for her?”
A flicker of surprise crossed his face. “I honestly didn’t expect it to be you. But how did you know about the plastic surgery?”
Hale had thought he’d been careful.
“It was your daughter Evelina, of course. She personally described what you look like, and that’s how we were able to make the sketch.”
Lemira even pulled out her phone and showed him the drawing.
As soon as Hale saw it, his expression shifted sharply. “You forced her to do that, didn't you? Whatever happened back then was my doing. If you have a problem, take it out on me!”
