When Two Winters Met (Henrietta and Yosef) novel Chapter 144

The conversation had stalled, and there seemed to be no new topic to broach. Just staring at each other on screen felt… a little foolish.

Henrietta scrambled for something to say.

Then Yosef spoke first. “Henrietta… have you thought about me at all?”

She froze, processing his question for several seconds before turning it back on him. “Have… you?”

It had been nearly half a month since they’d gotten married, and they had been apart the entire time. With no emotional foundation, their contact had been limited to brief, polite check-ins. He had always been so busy.

Yosef lowered his gaze, appearing to give the question serious thought. Henrietta felt a strange knot of nervousness tighten in her stomach as she asked herself the same question: Had she thought about him?

After a moment, Yosef looked up, his answer firm. “Yes.”

He had a wife now, someone waiting for him at home. It was impossible not to think of her, especially during those rare ten-minute lulls in his day. He wasn’t a single man anymore.

Henrietta’s eyes slowly brightened. Had she? It seemed… yes, she supposed she had.

“And you?” Yosef asked again.

“Yes,” she said, biting her lip slightly. “…I have.”

She was living in his home, Elysium Manor, sleeping in his bed. Every morning, she woke up and saw his rows upon rows of books. It was impossible not to think of him. She had even tried reading some of them. Though she could understand the words, the complex financial theories were often beyond her grasp, a world she wasn’t truly a part of.

As she thought about this, she gazed at the flawless man on her screen, an uncontrollable warmth rising in her cheeks.

Yosef seemed pleased with her answer, a hint of amusement in his tone. “Mutual, then. That’s good.”

Henrietta stared at him, a new feeling stirring within her. So this… was what it was like to be married, even in a relationship built on mutual respect rather than passion?

“Are you not hoping I’ll return soon?” Yosef asked next.

She blinked, brought back to reality. It was a question she hadn’t really considered.

Henrietta shook her head honestly. “I know you’re very busy. I figured… when you’re done with your work, you’ll come back when you’re supposed to, right?”

“Yes,” he confirmed. “But do you want me to come back sooner?”

“Are… are you coming back?” A flicker of anticipation lit up her eyes.

Yosef’s lips remained a thin line as he looked at her. He reached up, his strong fingers adjusting his glasses. A sudden whim to tease her came over him.
