"Are you in charge, or am I?" Henrietta cut her off sharply.
Jolie froze, as frantic as a cat on a hot tin roof, but utterly powerless. After a moment's thought, she decided to be direct. "Ms. Sargent, I'm getting the feeling you don't actually want to make this movie for me. You're the president of a huge company, you wouldn't go back on your word, would you? You promised me in front of the entire staff at that company meeting that you would make me a star!"
Henrietta played along. "And that's why I need to assemble the best team for you. I'm planning to have Charlotte direct your film. She hasn't wrapped her current project yet. Once she's done and has had some time to rest, she can start on yours."
Having Charlotte direct her debut was an incredible opportunity. But Jolie still felt a deep unease. "Finishing her movie and then taking a break... that will take a long time. Ms. Sargent, you're just stalling, aren't you? You're deliberately dragging this out because you don't want to make my movie."
Henrietta's expression turned to ice. "What if I am, and what if I'm not? It's my money, and this is my company. If you can't follow my instructions, that's your problem."
Trapped, Jolie's face crumpled, and tears began to stream down her cheeks. In the end, she had no choice but to surrender. "Alright. I'll listen to you."
She stood up. "I'll be going, then."
As soon as Jolie left, Joaquin asked, "You're not going to fund her, are you?"
Henrietta shot him a cold glare. "My business is none of your business."
Without another word, Joaquin stood up and walked out of the office. The moment he was gone, Winona said anxiously, "Do you think he's going to fund Jolie himself?"
Henrietta frowned. "I'll go check," Winona said immediately, rushing out after him.
Sure enough, in the hallway, she heard Joaquin call out to Jolie. Winona quickly ducked around a corner to listen.
Jolie was already at her wit's end, feeling deep down that Henrietta was just stringing her along with no real intention of making her a star. But she was powerless, lacking even the standing to get angry with her. When Joaquin called her name, a spark of hope ignited within her. This Mr. Leland certainly wasn't short on cash. He'd spent tens of millions on luxury goods for her before. The cost of a single movie would be a drop in the bucket for him.
Jolie immediately turned and approached him. Before Joaquin could even speak, she launched into her plea. "Mr. Leland! Ms. Sargent is just dragging her feet. Why don't you invest in my movie instead? I've finished my acting lessons and I've got the look now. See?" She twirled in front of him like a preening butterfly.
"You do look good," Joaquin admitted.
Jolie's face lit up. She struck a seductive pose, her hand reaching out to rest on Joaquin's shoulder as she purred, "Mr. Leland, if you invest in me and help me become a star, I'll do anything you want."
Joaquin raised an eyebrow. "Anything?"
Jolie's fingers danced suggestively on his shoulder. "Of course. If you back me, you'll be my patron. And naturally, you can do whatever you want with me."
Before Joaquin could respond, Winona stepped forward. "Get your hands off him."
