When Two Winters Met (Henrietta and Yosef) novel Chapter 314

Winona nodded. 'That's it! In his mind, he probably thinks you'll keep funding his career.' Henrietta said nothing more. Both Winona and Charlotte knew her thoughts must be a tangled mess. Honestly, the whole situation was profoundly shocking. First, there was the terror of nearly being stabbed. Then came the bewildering fact that her ex-boyfriend—the same disgusting, cheating ex-boyfriend—had been the one to shield her from the fatal blow. Anyone in her position would be grappling with a complex mix of emotions. It was impossible to know whether to feel grateful or something else entirely. But then, thinking about all the things Matteo had done, his malicious schemes and calculations... the word 'gratitude' felt entirely out of place. If anyone else had taken that knife for her today, it would have been a life-saving grace. But the fact that it was Matteo... made everything complicated. They arrived at the hospital shortly after. Matteo was in critical condition and had been rushed into the operating room for emergency surgery. Artina was waiting outside, her face pale, looking just as terrible. Henrietta walked up to her. 'You seem awfully worried, Ms. Harmon.' Artina looked up at her. 'We were partners, after all. And... I did care about him once.' Henrietta stared at her. 'Anyone who didn't know better would think you two were actually in a relationship.' At that, Artina seemed to flare with anger. 'Ms. Sargent! Matteo just saved your life, and he's in emergency surgery right now, his life hanging in the balance. Do you really need to be making snide remarks to me? Weren't you the one who said you two were long over? You're a married woman now!' Henrietta fell silent, turning her gaze away to look at the illuminated 'In Surgery' sign. Artina didn't speak again either, moving to sit on a nearby bench. After a moment, Artina added, 'If I weren't here, he wouldn't have anyone to run around for him.' Just as she finished speaking, Leon Lynn came running up, out of breath. 'How is he?' he asked immediately. Artina stood up. 'He just went into surgery a little while ago.' Leon looked at Henrietta. 'Ms. Sargent, that man has been arrested. The police will probably come to the hospital soon to take statements.' Henrietta nodded. They waited in silence for a few more minutes before the operating room doors suddenly swung open. Leon rushed forward. 'Doctor, how is Matteo?' The doctor's expression was grave. “Are you the patient's next of kin?” Leon nodded. 'His condition isn't good,' the doctor said. 'He was stabbed in the back. The wound is deep and has punctured his lung. He's hemorrhaging and needs an immediate blood transfusion.' Leon's eyes widened. 'Then give him one! Hurry!' 'The problem is,' the doctor explained, 'the blood bank is low on his type. Is anyone here a match?' Hearing this, Leon's head snapped toward Henrietta. Henrietta froze. She and Matteo did have the same blood type. How did Leon know that? She remembered Matteo bringing it up once during a dinner with the Coleman family. He had said they were fated, a perfect match, because their blood types were the same. The doctor's gaze also shifted to Henrietta. Before she could process it, Artina asked, 'Do Ms. Sargent and Matteo have the same blood type?' Leon finally remembered. 'Yes! Ms. Sargent, I remember now, right?' Henrietta's mind was reeling. Leon collapsed at her feet, clutching her hem as he begged. Please, it's a matter of life or death. Please save Matteo!'
