When Two Winters Met (Henrietta and Yosef) novel Chapter 56

Matteo was rendered speechless. Was it really just for the company’s sake?

Seeing him like this, Henrietta felt disgusted. “Aren’t you leaving?”

Matteo had no choice but to stand. “Henrietta, I won’t give up!”

Just as Pamela had said, winning her back wouldn’t be easy.

Henrietta didn’t even spare him another glance. “Get out.”

Matteo left in disgrace, but at the door, he suddenly turned. “Henrietta, I’m going to buy you a pair of shoes.”

Henrietta was initially repulsed, but on second thought, she said nothing.

Matteo took her silence as acquiescence. A flicker of joy ignited within him. She was just throwing a tantrum, he thought. Of course her words would be harsh.

“I’ll go right now!” he said happily.

But when he opened the door, he froze. He didn’t know Henrietta’s shoe size. He suddenly understood why she had remained silent. But it was too late to back down now. He had to steel himself and turn back. “Henrietta, what… what size shoe do you wear?”

Henrietta looked at him with such mockery that he felt a prickling heat all over his body, consumed by shame.

“I’ll… I’ll buy a few pairs. You can try them on,” Matteo stammered.

As he was about to leave, Artina suddenly appeared at the doorway. Matteo jumped, startled. “What are you doing here?” he blurted out.

“I need to speak with Ms. Sargent,” Artina replied. As she tried to walk past him, Matteo grabbed her arm, hissing, “Don’t you dare cause any trouble! Or you can kiss your career goodbye.”

Artina leaned in close to him. “Relax. I’m not as stupid as she is.”

Artina was just making conversation, trying to make her presence felt. Before, her affair with Matteo had to be kept secret, so she never dared to be seen around Henrietta too often. No one had suspected a thing, which showed how well they had hidden it at the company.

Now that she could “openly pursue” Matteo, she couldn't wait to come and taunt Henrietta. For Artina, it was the sweet taste of victory.

Henrietta looked at her. “You don’t want to? Fine, I can always find a replacement.”

“No, no, that’s not it,” Artina denied quickly, feigning an innocent and flattered look. “I just… find it a bit unbelievable. I’m in love with Matteo. Are you really… not angry? Not only are you not angry, but you’re going to heavily promote me…”

Henrietta knew she was just fishing for a reaction, her true intentions disgustingly transparent.

“Who you like has nothing to do with me,” Henrietta said. “My decisions are based on the company’s best interests. If you feel you’re not up to the task…”

“I am!” Artina interjected immediately. “I just wanted to ask… Ms. Sargent, do you really not love Matteo anymore? Aren’t you afraid that I’ll succeed in winning him over, and we’ll end up together?”
