“Is this true?” Pamela asked breathlessly.
The three of them nodded in unison, and Matteo’s mood instantly improved.
“And Mom,” Jolie added, “it turns out Henrietta is the one who invested in our company. She put in billions! All for Matteo!”
“Really, Matteo?” Pamela was so moved she teared up.
Matteo puffed out his chest. “Yes.”
Pamela hurried them to the dinner table. “It seems Henrietta is absolutely crazy about Matteo! Matteo, you have to seize this opportunity. Not only do you need to become an international star, but you also have to win her back! We were blind before. Thank goodness it’s not too late!”
Dexter chimed in, “It’s a great virtue to be able to correct one’s mistakes.”
“I know,” Matteo said glumly. “But Henrietta is really angry this time. She’s only backing me because I’m the most qualified artist at the company right now. But she won’t take me back.”
He then recounted what had happened in her office.
Pamela scoffed. “That’s perfectly normal. You didn’t expect her to forgive you right away, did you? She’s going to use this chance to wrap you around her finger. She won’t give in for at least a few months.”
Dexter raised his glass. “Your mother’s right. You can’t have a woman running a family business. Their only mistake was not having a son. Sooner or later, the son-in-law will have to take charge. They can’t possibly let an adopted son do it.”
Hearing this, Matteo took a few more drinks. “Henrietta is actually a good person, just a bit cold and arrogant. As long as she behaves, listens to me, and treats me like I’m the center of her world… as long as she stops being so high and mighty with me… I… I do love her very much.”
Leon clinked his glass with his. “Henrietta is beautiful. If she were more obedient, any man would find her charming.”
Pamela diligently placed more food on Matteo’s plate. “My son is so capable, our family’s golden goose! I know you love Henrietta, and that’s a blessing for her. Once you’re married and she gets pregnant, she’ll be busy with childbirth and raising the kids. A man can’t be expected to stay home and look after babies, can he? During that time, Henrietta will have no choice but to hand all her business affairs over to you. She can’t go to work with a big belly, can she? So naturally, you’ll be her rock, the one supporting the family. And she? She’ll have no one to rely on but you!”
