Artina stared at him. “You’re trying to get rid of me, aren’t you? You chose to be with me, so don’t even think about kicking me to the curb! If you do, I don’t mind taking us both down. I’ll lose my career, but you won’t get off easy either!”
The threat worked. Matteo’s fear flared, and he quickly softened his tone. “Where did you get the idea that I want to get rid of you? You’re just overthinking things. It’s just… you’re so impulsive. I’m genuinely worried you’ll mess everything up.”
Artina’s eyes welled up with tears. “I’m not an idiot. I can be patient; it’s not like I haven’t been before. I’m just scared you’ll use me and then toss me aside.”
Seeing her vulnerability, Matteo’s heart softened. “I won’t. I told you, once I marry her, the Sargent Group will fall into my hands. Don’t you want a piece of that?”
“Of course I do!” Artina said immediately.
“Then you have to be patient,” Matteo insisted. “No more causing trouble. Just behave.”
“Okay, I know.” Artina turned docile, melting into his arms. “Matteo, I’ve missed you.”
Matteo had been drinking heavily, and the alcohol was making his head spin. Besides, this was Artina’s redeeming quality: as wild as she could be, she knew when to be submissive. It was a stark contrast to Henrietta.
He was still smarting from the humiliation Henrietta had dealt him earlier, and now, with this young, soft body in his arms…
“Matteo, let’s go inside,” Artina cooed. “I want you.”
Matteo unlocked the door, and as soon as it clicked shut behind them, Artina was on him, kissing him passionately. With no fear of Henrietta walking in, they fell onto the sofa.
Afterward, as he caught his breath, Matteo remembered something important. The chat history on Artina’s phone was a major liability.
His words filled Artina with a sense of triumph and superiority. “Really?” she asked, her voice softening. “You’re not just lying to me?”
“Why would I lie?” Matteo said. “If I left you, where would I ever find a girl as wonderful as you?”
She was completely won over. Seizing the opportunity, Matteo told her what Pamela had suggested.
Artina’s eyes widened. “Your mother said that? Does she hate Henrietta that much? I thought she was so nice to her. When Henrietta hit her, she didn’t even dare to make a peep and even apologized.”
“You have to make sacrifices to win,” Matteo explained. “If my mom isn’t nice to her, if she doesn’t endure a little humiliation, how will Henrietta ever agree to marry me? After we’re married, I’ll only have children with you. We’ll let her raise our baby.”
