Chapter 250
Luna Demetra.
“I love you.” Emris whispers once he lets go of my lips, and I hug him.

I hug him and we stay like that for a long time. We stay like that for a long time, long enough that nobody walking in on us right now would ever believe we were screaming at each other last night.
I spent the whole shower this morning replaying everything, wondering if I’d overreacted, wondering if getting a whole separate house was really the next move or just me being dramatic. I’d even asked Tyson before the bonding ceremony if he knew of any properties for sale where celebrities like him would crash in for a weekend, somewhere ridiculous-
That’s how pissed I was, because if Laura was still going to be living under that roof, there was no version of me surviving nine full months in that pack house pretending to be fine about it.
When I walked away after seeing Janet, I genuinely wanted Emris to follow after me. I was disappointed when I turned and saw it was Tyson. And then I tripped, because I was so pissed that Emris wasn’t there, and that annoyance made me even more annoyed, because it meant I needed him. That after everything, after all my pride, he’s still the one I wanted catching me.
“I love you too.” I stare into his eyes and hug him all over again, feeling his hands sink into my hair, letting my eyes fall shut.
Of course I love him. Last night I told myself I’d never listen to another word out of his mouth, but all of a sudden, he became Emris again…followed me, got possessive in that stupid hot way he does with every color of emotions written across his wolfish face, right up there with our usual banter, and he just knew I was hiding something.
Reading me like an open book. Because no one else other than Emris knows who I am in the deep. And talking about our baby, knowing every tiny detail about her before she’s even here… it makes me remember, all over again, why I trust him. Why I love him.
“I can’t wait to go home.” I feel his lips on my neck.
“Of course you can’t, Emris.” I chuckle, knowing exactly why this bad wolf can’t wait to go home. He wants to unwrap me like a present and I don’t mind.
“And I fucking hate Tyson, Demiiii!” Emris says it like he’s been holding it straight in his chest and now it’s starting to break him apart.
“I’m begging you with everything in love. Please don’t use him to make me jealous.”
“And why were you dancing with Sabrina’s bride of honor?” I pinch him right at his abs, and he groans laughing.
“Babe, she asked me for a dance.”
“She did!? Ugh, wow, talk about girl code.”

“Uh, no, let’s talk about mate code. You let a wolf with fake muscles like that teach you how to dance?” Emri pulls back an inch, putting space between us like he’s actually offended.
“His muscles are not fake-”
“That’s not what I’m asking.”
“I wasn’t using him to make you jealous. He’s a business partner.”
“No, he’s a scumbag. I could tell you exactly when and why that bastard qualifies as a scumbag on every leve but I don’t want my little grape hearing all these bad words.”
“Oh honey, she knows her dad already curses like a wolf on a ship.” I say, turning my head as he goes to ope the door. I smile, realizing that was his whole plan, to seize the key, get us bickering and then talking again.
I gotta give it to him.
“Keep that pulse like that for me. Smooth and steady. You have nothing to grieve, nothing to feel like you’re missing, not when you already have your own family now. You’ve become everything Janet could never be you. You and me… we’re the kind of people who’d do anything for our kids.” Emris says it, and I start walking toward him at the door, my hand landing flat against his chest, right over the open part of his shirt, and moons, the slutty effort it takes not to just rip the rest of those buttons open right here.
But hey, I should probably pipe these hormones in a little.
“It’s okay, I’m gonna give it to you when we get home. You wanna ride? Or will you be my pillow princess? W can do both-”
I open my mouth out loud, embarrassed. This jerk read everything off my face.
“I didn’t even say it!” I stare at him absurdly.
“Okay.” Emris just nods, stepping out of the room first and making me look like some kind of thirsty pregnan whoring she-wolf.
We end up walking but before we even get out of the house, there’s already something happening in the sitting area where Dad, Allison, and Scotty are in there. I see Slade too, and Sabrina apologizing for something.
Probably the invite of Janet but it’s not like she knew.
Janet immediately looks back because everyone’s eyes are on Emris and me after we walked in. She and I stare eye to eye. I’m not gonna say anything first. I’m just gonna listen.
“Demetra.” Janet says, staring at me in awe the same way she did every single time since we’ve seen each other.
What’s the awe even for? Maybe it’s a “Thank the moons I survived after I basically threw you away “awe”
She looks down at her own fingers, twisting them together. “I thought you were a Black Covenant. That’s why I left you there.”

I already knew that. I can feel Emris stiffen beside me in real time. Derisha already told me all of this a lon time ago. Janet slept with Derisha’s father. Emris’s own grandfather.
So.
“Excuse me?” Emris asks.
“Our pee paw was one of the males she slept with” Silver says.
“What the…I’m sorry, what?” Emris blares this time.
“I thought I was leaving my daughter in her birth pack.” Janet says it fast, like she’s rehearsed this exact sentence a hundred times in the mirror. “Since she was Covenant blood, I was sure she’d be fine there. But also had a one-night stand with Alpha Ronin, and I guess some part of me just wanted to believe that the p in my womb belonged to the Black Covenant instead.”
“What part would suggest that?” Dad asks.
“A Seer wolf told me that I would have a legacy in the black covenant pack-”
“Amira.” I breathe.
Janet looks at me like she’s impressed that I just responded to her. But I catch Aunt Allison’s eye and she already knows the absolute last thing I want to do right now is engage this woman in conversation.
“Who’s Amira?!
“Amira is our granddaughter. The heir to the Black Covenant pack. That has to be what the Seer wolf meant when she or he told you about a legacy. You know, the one that convinced you a one-night stand with someone else’s father was worth the risk.” Allison’s voice is pure disgust dressing every syllable.
Janet takes a breath and breathes into it.
“Were you really that hungry to climb the social ladder that you’d sleep with your own best friend’s father, all because some Seer told you you’d have a legacy in the Covenant pack? It’s insane when you actually sit with because the legacy you’re talking about has nothing to do with you in the end. The Moon Goddess herself already fated Demetra to be Emris’s mate. You didn’t need to play any part in that. You were never necessary.
“I was immature-”
“Immature, Janet?” Allison’s voice rises. “Really? No, you were the most self-centered bitch on this planet. And look…you still got yourself another Alpha on your arm. So it wasn’t a thing of the past. It’s a thing you just had to have. Clinging to that social ladder.”
“I just want to speak to Demetra!” Janet’s voice breaks into something closer to a scream, and she turns back to face me like she’s terrified everything being said around her is going to rub off on me, like I don’t have my own twenty-something years of hurt to fill in the gaps with, like she needs to get to me before anyone else’s version of the story does.
Now that everyone is silent, and Janet stares at me. Tears are coming out of her eyes, but I don’t understand why. Slowly, she goes down on her knees and raises her head to look at me.

“Demetra, I… I don’t even know what to say.” Her voice shatters halfway through the sentence, and she can’t force out a single coherent word after that, just stares up at me with her mouth working around nothing.
And it genuinely looks like she doesn’t know what to say. Like she’s been turning it over in her head this who time and there no explanation good enough to hand to the baby she gave birth to and then fled from. I wate her. We all watch her, for what feels like ten full minutes, waiting for her to land on something, anything, an every single time she just starts weeping.
Somewhere in that, I realize I already have what I need from this. Because if I had abandoned Amira the way this woman left me… I wouldn’t know what to say either. I’d have no explanation. I’d just stare and cry at her feet because there’s no explanation.
And that is what this is.
“I’m done.” I whisper without looking at Emris.
He signals two of the Four Fangs, Abel and Jackson to get her out of here. The moment she sees them comin I start walking away. But somehow, I’m about to catch the moment she grabs Emris, and I see her grab him b the shoulder to yell the world.
“Den!”
The Four Fangs grab her out, and I look at Emris. I know he heard exactly that too.
