Chapter 251

Alpha Emris.

“Let’s see… an armchair there, a diaper changing table over there… give me a recap on what you’ve been up to, Wren.”

“Oh, Alpha-” She adjusts her glasses.

I already know what she’s been up to.

I’ve barely had four consecutive hours of sleep between back-to-back pack meetings this week, and Demi’s already back to work, which means I’m the only one left with time to think about nesting. I wonder why it’s not even on her mind.

I remember how prepared I was for Milo.

I also remember the borderline obsessive amount of planning that went into everything before little grape existed.

So when I told Wren we’d have a “quick meeting” here before my next one, I don’t think she understood what she was actually walking into.

“I’ve been well.” She shifts nervously. “Just taking orders from Monroe.”

“Well, I’m back.”

“Oh-back like, back… back?”

“Emotionally back.” I fold my arms, eyes moving between two cribs set up on opposite walls in a Vogue 2026 Richest baby In The World Magazine. If I go with pink, Amira’s going to throw a fit out of pure sibling jealousy.

And when I think about little grape, she leans more to a light purple. So purple. I circle the crib I want, and Wren gasps again.

“What, is it ugly?” I ask.

“Uh-no, Alpha. It’s just… it just…it costs $300,000.”

“Anything for a princess.” I say and walk out of the nursery and I hear her by my side.

“I didn’t see you Tuesday or Wednesday. I only caught you for a few minutes Thursday

“Um. I did come by the pack house. Demetra wanted to watch a movie, and you know how pregnant she- wolves get…their hormones-”

“I’m the only one Demetra’s been rude to lately cause I fathered the pup? Sure you didn’t have her cover for you so you could sneak off and be out and about with Alpha Seth?”

Chapter 251

“A-A-A-A-”

“You should be glad I’ve got my emotions back in check. That’s a wolf I dislike. Well… used to dislike, deeply, viscerally. But now that Tyson’s in the picture, my dislike for Seth has shrunk down to about…” I hold my hand out in front of me, measuring an imaginary gap between two fingers, adjusting it with exaggerated precision like I’m calibrating scientific instrument.

I want to be fucking precise.

“Yeah. Right about here. And now, want to guess where my hatred for Tyson currently sits?”

Wren raises her hands hesitantly. “Right… right about… here?”

“NO. Right here!” snap my hand up sharply, higher, and one claw slips free from my pinky, making her stumble backward a full step. I swipe it back in and blow off steam. “Go to the fucking library and get me everything I need to know about the Sahara Den.”

“S-Sahara Den. Alpha, there’s no book that’s going to have information on something like that. But wait, why are you even looking into it? I heard you already….destroyed it.”

“Is that what the Deltas are saying?”

“I don’t know what the Deltas are saying.” She quickly takes that back, realizing that would mean the wolves in the pack house have been talking behind my back. I give her approximately two minutes to say it.

“Okay, Jackson?” She finally admits. “You know, one of the fangs four… or is it four fangs? I think he mentioned it at the cafeteria.”

I click my tongue, done wasting time. “Go do what I told you, and bring me answers in two hours.” She bobs her head and vanishes down the hallway. Heading toward my office to prep for the next meeting. I spot Laura walking in from the opposite end of the corridor.

“Drop your uniform on your way out.” I say it before she can even get a syllable past her lips.

“Emris….what?!”

“The timeline’s over. I told you to bring me the shapeshifter-I shove my office door open and step through “And you’re walking back into my pack house like you’ve forgotten your position as Delta was always temporary. No shapeshifter, no post.”

I settle behind my desk and I don’t even need to look at her face to imagine exactly what’s playing our on it right now… betrayal, probably, dressed up as righteous indignation. It must be spelling “affer everything I’ve done for you, Emris. I took you to the Sahara Den to help you!”

“Emris, why don’t you trust me? I’m the one who took you to the Sahara Den in the first place”

There we have it

“Radius is your uncle. His daughter is the shapeshifter who let you take her place, and somehow you expect me to believe the powerful Trybrid is just an innocent bystander in all of this, keeping tabs on me out of the goodness of her heart? You think even Milo would buy that?”

Chapter 251

Laura moves her neck like that makes no sense…like the accusation doesn’t compute and I’m the unreasonable one here.

“No, you… Emris, but you believe me. All of a sudden, we come back to the pack house and now you distrus me. I knew this would happen. It’s Demetra, isn’t it?”

I just raise an eyebrow at her… take a guess. Don’t worry, you’ll be taking plenty of guesses in Tatanos in exactly one week, because as it turns out, I don’t need Laura anymore.

The night Demetra and I got back from the lion pride’s territory, an envelope arrived at the pack house with names following the members of the Den, their contacts, addresses, Laura’s private login credentials to the Sahara Den’s server, proof she’d been given access from the inside. Sent to us courtesy of Janet, who will apparently do absolutely anything to stay in Demetra’s good graces again, even if it means throwing her own stepdaughter under the bus to buy her way back into her biological daughter’s life.

I asked Demetra if I should take the chase, and she gave me the permission.

Reign whose help I needed most, given his history with tracking rogue shapeshifters is a solid two hours our from the pack house, but I already have everything I need.

What I need right now is to keep Laura distracted on the wrong things, such as proving her worth.

“Emris, I love you.”

“Okay. Then tell me where the shapeshifter is.” I wait, watching her, and we stare at each other across the desk in silence until she’s the one who blinks first, wiping at the tears gathering in her eyes before they can fall.

“That’s your response? I confess my love to you, and that’s what you give me back?”
