When You Were My Mate (Demetra and Emris) novel Chapter 51

Chapter 51

Demetra.

“Oh, don’t give me that face yet. If you were a Luna like us, you would understand. You see, some Lunas saw the way their husbands were gawking at you at the Alpha fest and they were a bit… jealous.” She puts a hand on her chest. “As leader of the Luna Chapel, I just had to tell them some dirty past about you that would put their minds at rest. Nothing that bad.”

Elena chuckles but at once, the look on all the women seated around changes. Like a switch flipped. They look at me from head to toe in disgust like they’ve heard the worst thing imaginable about me.

Oh, so she’s the leader of some Luna stupidity? And she’s already got them gathered here. So she knew I would come after that bullshit she did with my daughter.

What did she tell them about me? It doesn’t even matter. I’m here to warn her and that’s what I will do.

“Elena-”

“Is it true that you slept with every cleaner, every Gamma, and every male who looked at you twice!?” The Luna with black curls of hair snaps, daggers in her eyes. She’s younger than the others, eager to prove herself with that manufactured outrage on her face.

I feel my hands tighten into fists.

“I never did-”

“All the men wanted you at the Alpha fest because you looked so innocent.” Another woman cuts me off. “Only if they knew that Derisha once caught you with a cock in your mouth behind the pack house. Or the time you slept with three brothers in one night!”

My heart pounds. My hands shake. What are these lies…these disgusting, filthy lies-

“That’s… that’s a lie!” I yell.

“Or the time she was caught with an old man… a married elder, on her knees in the storage room.” A third woman chimes in. “Is that a lie too? Isn’t that why you were chased from the covenant pack?”

“Wait-” I try to speak but they won’t stop.

“She probably doesn’t even know who her daughter’s father is.” The black-haired Luna sneers again. “Probably was too busy getting passed around to keep track. And now that little girl is stealing invitations card so she can help her mother plot against Alpha Emris.”

“Don’t worry, Luna Elena.” One woman gets up on her feet to pa Elena’s shoulder. “We’ll make sure these rumors about her go around. Every pack. Every territory. She won’t be able to show her face anywhere.”

My mind is still whirling and spinning! Did this bitch just cook up all these lies against me?

My chest rises. Twenty pairs of eyes are staring at me with disgust and hatred based on lies Elena fed them like candy.

“I never did that!” I scream it again.

“Oh you can scream all you want, Demetra.” Elena gets up on her feet and smoothes her dress. “It’s my responsibility as head of the Luna Chapel to let everyone know who you were. I also think it’s fair that the eligible Alphas in the city know your past so you don’t fool them.”

She takes a step toward me.

“Plus, I’m guessing you ran here because your daughter came crying.” She pouts. “I only warned that little girl not to be like you… at this little age, she’s already sneaking things to give to my son. That’s a problem. We are all concerned mothers and we don’t want your daughter to teach our little boys and girls wrong things.”

She puts her hand on her chest like she’s wounded, like she’s the victim here.

“We think it’s best you take Amira out of Magnus.”

“Excuse me!?” I look at the Luna who said that. My heart stops.

“I’m so concerned for you, Elena.” That Luna continues, shaking her head. “That little girl is always playing with Milo. Who knows what she’s learning from her mother?”

Elena puts a look of fear on her face like she’s the one in danger and the ladies all rise to their feet as a united front of designer dresses and judgment.

“I think we should write a letter to the school. They would have to listen to us… we are all Lunas and our vote means something. We shouldn’t let someone with such a past near the children…”

“Let’s get out of here. There’s nothing you can say to these fools.” Tiffany says to me, tugging my arm. “I told you it was a wrong idea to come here…”

But I can barely hear her.

My ears are ringing.

My daughter. They’re talking about my daughter.

That little girl who draws pictures for me and leaves them under my pillow. Who sings to herself when she thinks no one’s listening. Who asked me just yesterday if we could get a puppy.

They want to kick her out of school. Out of Magnus. Away from the only friends she’s made since we got here. All because of

an innocent invitation between two kids. All because Elena decided I was a threat.

When it was just me, I could take it. I’ve been taking it my whole life….the whispers, the stares, the rumors. I built armor around my heart years ago. Call me a whore, fine. Call me a charity case, whatever. I’ve heard worse.

But this? This is my baby.

My little girl who has done nothing wrong and now her entire future at this school is in danger because of her mother’s reputation.

I look at Elena who is looking back at me with victory shining in her eyes. She’s won. She knows it. She destroyed me and my daughter in one afternoon and she’s going to go home tonight and sleep perfectly fine.

My blood boils and something shifts inside me. Something ancient, Something furious.

“I am Emris true-”

“Don’t.” Tiffany stops me, grabbing my arm violently as I’m a second from exposing it. Everyone looks our way from the murmuring they were doing with each other. I look at Tiffany and she shakes her head hard.

“Don’t say it. Not here. It’s not the time.”

“You are Emris’ what?” Elena asks.

And that’s when I realize-

That’s when I see exactly how to punish her.
