I trust my mother not to hurt her granddaughter.

But I can’t force Demetra to have that trust yet. I can’t transfer it like a key. She has to find it herself, and right now, she’s standing on the opposite side of a canyon with no bridge in sight.
“Emris!” Mom yells again louder this time.
“I’m tired-”
“Silver, can I speak to you?”
Demetra completely looks away from my mother. She turns to my brother instead, and something in my chest tightens at the way she refers to Silver with so much gentleness that I feel like I’m hearing a voice from five years ago.
“Of course. At your service, Luna.”
They both walk away together. I watch the way her shoulder brushes his arm, the way he leans down to hear her better.
“You said you would speak to her!”
My mother’s voice drags me back.
“Well, I can’t force her, can I?” I snap back. “If you’ve looked closely at Demetra, you’d know she’s not the pack charity case anymore. If you want her trust, maybe start by working for it. Don’t drag me into the middle to do your work for you. plus, the both of us are not in a good place anymore, so don’t even expect it from me.”
“So… so.” Mom barges into my path before I can walk away. “I’m supposed to not go near my granddaughter for the rest of
“Mom, please.” I pinch the bridge of my nose. “I’ve got a heap load of work on my desk already, and I want to clear it so I can spend time with the kids.”
Then the door opens and Regan comes in with Elena is limping beside him like a wounded bird that forgot how to fly
Now what the hell is this!
“I knew someone was missing in the house.” I say, stopping cold.
Elena looks weak and pale. A look that comes from too many empty bottles and not enough meals. So I’m sure there’s some stupid excuse attached to this, but I don’t want to believe that means she has to be here.
“What is this?”
“I found her at her apartment drunk. Not just drunk but overdosed.” Regan answers.
“What, Elena!? Are you trying to kill yourself?” Mom asks.
“Where’s Milo… I wanna see him.” Elena breathes with anxiety, scanning the hallway like she expects my son to come running.

I just stare at her. She’s looking at me with red eyes like I’m supposed to break all mountains while seeing her like this. Like guilt is supposed to flood my chest and wash away every boundary I’ve set.
You think I’m gonna let you see Milo while you look like a junkie? You wanna see him, but you had no problem trying to kill yourself if Regan didn’t find you. And what were you doing at her apartment?” I ask, swinging the question back to Regan.
“She she sent me a message that made me rush over.” He holds up his phone.
I don’t ask to read it. I don’t need to.
“You are so fucking cruel, Emris-”
“The pack has a new Luna.” I cut Elena off before she can finish. “You coming here like this doesn’t make any sense. Granted, you have the right to see your son anytime you want. I didn’t say you couldn’t. But you don’t come here looking like a junkie. Take her back to wherever and get her some help.”
Regan lets go of Elena. He steps around her and stands directly in front of me. Chest to chest. Brother to brother.
“Let’s put her in a wing.”
“No.” I answer immediately!
“She’s been your fucking Luna for years….she…she at least needs a moment to process this loss!”
“What do you think is gonna happen to her being in the pack house where she gets the daily reminder that she’s no longer Luna? Are you thinking rationally? She’ll hear the gossip from the Zetas. The omegas. The housekeepers. Every single person will land another rumor so correct me if I’m wrong, but isn’t that worse?”
Regan grits.
“Her parents just disowned her.” He tries a different angle. “The whole city is talking about her regardless, so it’s not like she can escape the rumors. What if she hurts herself again? Are you gonna explain that to Milo? That you wouldn’t just give his mom a freaking space in the pack house? It’s not even gonna be here….just a wing so we can monitor her until she’s better. Even if you don’t love her, try to remember that she pushed your son out of her body.”
Elena whimpers behind him.
Plus, Regan is making it hard for me to stand on my no.
