"If it's the first scenario, I'll go and apologize myself. Whether I get to see her or not isn't up to you; we need to see what Auntie thinks. If it's the second one, I'm out of here," Victoria said with a hint of smugness twinkling in her eyes.
Rosemary couldn't help but chuckle at her. "Didn't your guy behind you tell you? He and I are... kinda like siblings now."
Pearl had mentioned wanting to take her as a goddaughter before, but Rosemary had turned it down. Becoming siblings with her ex after the divorce—now that's a real tangled web.
Maxwell looked away, his face emotionless as he glanced at Victoria. "You stay here."
Pearl's bedroom door was open, and before Maxwell could even step in, he heard her say, "Please ask Ms. Temple to come up."
She had already caught wind of the commotion downstairs.
Maxwell frowned. "Mom..."
"Don't talk to me," Pearl said, getting worked up which brought on a bout of chest pain. She took a deep breath to calm herself before continuing, "You brought her here, so isn't that like bringing her to meet the parents? I'm giving you the chance now, go call her up here."
"It's not about meeting the parents, and I didn't bring her here for that."
He had just come to grab something and hadn't planned on Victoria even meeting his mother.
"I'm telling you to call her up, and you're so reluctant. What are you afraid of, that I'm gonna eat her alive or that she'll get upset? If you're so protective, then you both can scram!"
When Victoria heard that Pearl wanted to see her, she shot a sly smile at Rosemary. "Sorry Rosemary, but Auntie wants to see me. I know what you're worried about. Relax, I won't rub her the wrong way."
Since Pearl had asked to see her, Rosemary didn't try to stop Victoria, and she prepared to leave herself.
She had seen enough to know there was no danger to life, so she could rest easy.
Just a few steps out, Wendy came chasing out of the villa. "Mrs. Templeton, the lady asks that you stay for a bit, she's got something to say to you."
...
Upstairs, in the bedroom.
"Auntie."
Victoria looked at Pearl, who was still hooked up to an IV, and greeted her respectfully. Even though Pearl was pale and not as formidable as she had been years ago, Victoria still feared her deep down.
At that moment, it was just the two of them in the room; everyone else had stepped out.
Pearl asked, "How much money will it take for you to leave my son?"
Victoria didn't get it. How did she fall short compared to Rosemary? Pearl was all sweetness and light with Rosemary, ready to lay the whole world at her feet, but when it came to her, it was like she was looking at a beggar on the street... no, worse, like trash, completely ignored.
"Auntie, what about you? What will it take for you to drop your prejudice and let me and Maxwell be together? If you hadn't forced us apart back then, we wouldn't have wasted all these years for nothing."
"Whether it was because of me or not, you know very well. I know my son. If he really wanted you, it wouldn't matter if you'd gone abroad or even died and turned to ashes, he'd still want to keep you close where he could always see you."
"Maxwell is supposed to accompany me to pay respects to my father today." Victoria dropped this bombshell out of the blue, nearly causing Pearl, who thought she was prepared for anything, to faint again with shock.
After a long silence, not because she didn't want to speak but because she was too angry to speak, she finally managed.
