Whispers of Destiny: His Belated Love novel Chapter 178

Rosemary refused to get out of the car, and Maxwell didn't force her either. But his stance, firmly blocking the car door, was pressure enough.

The two were at an impasse. The mountain air was colder than in the city, and the wind was fierce, slicing through the skin like a knife.

The silence was finally broken by the sudden ring of Rosemary's phone. The name 'Martin' lit up the screen, catching Maxwell's eye, and his previously nonchalant expression darkened immediately.

Rosemary answered the call, “Martin, what's up?”

Her tone was completely different from the lifeless one she used around Maxwell.

Martin said, “A friend gave me a bunch of fireworks. Do you want to check them out? We could find a spot and set them off.”

The fireworks were a special purchase. Martin knew that Rosemary was alone in Greenwood and had fallen out with her uncle's family just before the New Year. He wanted to cheer her up but didn't want to burden her, so he lied about them being a gift from a friend.

Rosemary glanced at Maxwell, a trace of disdain in her eyes, all directed at him, of course.

Men really do crave what they can't have.

The winter mountain was silent, but Martin's voice came through the earpiece, crystal clear to Maxwell's ears.

Maxwell didn't know what was going through Rosemary's head, but seeing her turn to look at him, he figured she was thinking about how to ditch him and go meet Martin.

He smirked, a half-mocking tone in his voice, “Done chatting? We still have fireworks to light, remember?”

Martin was taken aback, “You're at the Templeton family's place?”

Pearl treated Rosemary as if she were her own daughter, definitely wouldn't leave her to spend New Year's alone in the apartment. “Should I come pick you up?”

“No need,” Rosemary didn't want to delve into whether his 'pick you up' meant actually taking her to the fireworks or just showing off to Maxwell. “Just spend a good New Year's with your folks. Wish them a happy New Year for me!”

The person on the other end was silent for a moment before responding, “Alright, Rosemary, happy New Year!”

After those words, Martin hung up first.

Rosemary's hands were so frozen she kept holding the phone even after the busy tone ended.

“Can't let go?” Maxwell sneered coldly, “Too bad he hung up pretty decisively.”

Rosemary put away her phone, pushed past him, and got out of the car, “Where's the lighter?”

Maxwell fished out the lighter and handed it to her, “It's not completely dark yet. Let's go in and have dinner first, and then...”

His words were drowned out by a burst of crackling firecracker noise.

Rosemary squatted there, one hand with the lighter and the other picking up the small fireworks, igniting and tossing them out without any concern for aesthetics.

It was like she was just ticking off a task, her face written with reluctance and eagerness to wrap things up.

Maxwell had bought high-end fireworks that others couldn't get their hands on, but now the colorful, wildly popping sparks had no beauty to them.

“Rosemary...” He grabbed her, taking the lighter from her hand. “Even if you don't know any better, don't flaunt your ignorance. Is this how you're supposed to set off fireworks?”

The fire burning inside him now was fiercer than the ones lighting up half the resort.

The noise was too loud; Rosemary couldn't hear him clearly, just seeing his lips move, but she could guess it wasn't anything nice from his expression.

Half a minute later, the ruckus finally died down, making the surroundings even quieter.

Maxwell, clearly annoyed, said, “Let me do it.”

He bent down to light the fireworks, which highlighted the lines of his back and rear.

Rosemary's gaze fell on his silhouette, and she finally remembered when she had made that wish—during their first year of marriage, on her birthday.
