When Rosemary walked in with breakfast, the tension in the hospital room was so thick you could cut it with a knife. Maxwell and Hogan looked like they were seconds away from throwing punches at each other.
She'd only been gone for half an hour, and these two old geezers were at it again?
Her arrival was like a pebble tossed into a still pond, shattering the calm and creating a ripple effect.
Maxwell shot Rosemary a glacial glance, got up from the bed, and headed straight for the door. He was still in yesterday's clothes, wrinkled like they'd been fished out of a trash can, especially around the collar. There was even a bruise on his neck from where the collar had dug in.
As he brushed past her, he said coldly, "Rosemary, you and him are really buddy-buddy, aren't you?"
His voice was so low it was practically frozen over.
They'd even discussed whether he could cut the mustard. What’s next, comparing who's the top dog?
Rosemary was a walking question mark.
But Maxwell wasn't in the mood to clear things up for her. He left her hanging with that cryptic comment and was gone.
Puzzled, Rosemary looked over at Hogan, who was now chilling out. He was leaning against the headboard, with a half-smile plastered on his face as he watched her. "What did you do?"
"He's just jealous, got all hot under the collar when someone hit a nerve."
Hogan was fine, with only some superficial wounds. He didn't even need his bandages changed, and after breakfast, he'd be out of the hospital.
Rosemary turned down his offer to take her home and hailed a cab back to her apartment. As soon as she stepped out of the elevator, she saw a figure waiting at her door. Thanks to Maxwell, this kind of thing was starting to feel like just another Tuesday.
She frowned in annoyance, "What do you want?"
Larry had been there since last night, knocking with no answer. Rosemary had blacklisted him, so his calls went straight to voicemail. After asking the security guard, he learned she'd gone out, so he just camped out waiting for her to return, which turned into an all-nighter.
"You're a young woman, staying out all night, what's that look like?" Larry had waited all night, almost leaving several times, but kept thinking Rosemary might show up any minute. He'd waited this long, so what's a little longer?
Hanging on to that thought, he had waited until now, his patience worn thin, his belly full of fire. For a moment, he forgot their relationship had deteriorated beyond repair, and he slipped into a fatherly tone of reprimand.
Rosemary paused in unlocking her door, then finally spoke, "Mr. Chambers, I'm not your daughter anymore. Save those words for Stacey."
Larry got straight to the point with a serious expression, "Tell Maxwell to pull that show off the air, and all the news about your career as a conservationist, all of it, take it down."
Rosemary turned in shock. She thought Larry came to force her to remarry, not wanting to give back the money Maxwell had given, but it turned out it was because of the show.
She had gone on the show to see if anyone would come after her once they knew she was Rosalind's daughter.
She didn't believe her aunt's story that her mother's marriage to Larry was a sham.
"I knew. She was going to get an abortion, but the doctor said she was too weak, that an abortion might leave her barren or worse, it might cost her life. I'd been in love with your mother for so many years; I couldn't stand by and watch her risk her life, so I mustered the courage and proposed. Your mom didn't like you, thinking you were that man's seed. She nearly smothered you several times. I didn't dare leave you alone with her when you were little, which is why I was hands-on with everything from your birth until you started school."
Rosemary had no memory of these events, but indeed, Larry had spent more time with her when she was young. Her mother was always busy, often locked away in her studio for days on end. Later, as Rosemary grew up, her mother treated her well.
As this thought surfaced, Larry's voice came through again, "As you got older, maybe because you spent more time together, she grew fond of you and got rid of those prejudices. She started treating you like a normal mother would her daughter."
Rosemary replied, "Regardless, I should thank you, Mr. Chambers. I won't see you out."
If it was her real dad, she might have felt bitter, wondering why her stepmom turned against her the moment she walked through the door, always siding with Stacey to punish her. But since he wasn't her biological father, it's pretty normal for people to play favorites between their own kids and the ones they've taken under their wing.
After dropping that bomb, Rosemary headed to the bathroom, not giving a hoot about whether Larry had left or not.
Her reflection stared back at her from the mirror, her eyes, mouth, and the shape of her face were a spitting image of her mother. But that forehead and nose, could they be... like her father's?
No way she was going to pull the plug on the show.
She wasn't obsessed with tracking down her birth dad to reconnect with her roots. The fact that her identity as Rosalind's daughter could drag that man into the spotlight was something she hadn't seen coming. But if what Larry said was true, that this guy loathed her mom and even had a hand in killing her, then she was dead set on dragging him out into the open, no matter the cost!
