I took it from him without blinking and tossed it into the fireplace.

“You know the university’s tried to recruit me before. But I have a baby–how could I leave you guys?”

“It’s just a notice. I already turned it down.”

I knew exactly what Flynn wanted to hear.

He bought it immediately. His shoulders relaxed.

“Sure. A wife’s place is at home with the kids. With your smarts, you’ll be perfect for teaching our son.”

“Speaking of which, the baby’s almost a month old. I’m throwing a party at the Officers‘ Club on base. He’s the only

heir to the Reeves name.”

I smiled and agreed.

Perfect. Couldn’t have planned it better myself.

The more people, the better. The bigger the scene.

Time flew. When the celebration day arrived, Flynn really went all out.

He’d reserved the entire Officers‘ Club, invited brass from the base, plus friends and family.

Flynn couldn’t stop grinning, dressed in his dress uniform as he welcomed guests.

Holly wore a designer dress, standing beside him. They looked more like a couple than we ever had.

At the height of the party, he raised his glass and looked at me with fake sincerity.

“Mira, thank you for giving me a son.”

“But I’m a soldier–duty calls. I’ll be deploying to Fort Bragg soon. The boy’s in your hands. I trust you’ll raise him right.”

Holly beamed. “I’m deploying with Flynn’s unit as a medic. Don’t worry, Mira. I’ll take care of him. You just focus on the baby.”

Everyone praised their “sacrifice“-putting country before family.

I clenched my fists.

Flynn seemed to have forgotten how he’d convinced me to give up my career and stay home.

They acted so torn up about leaving the child. The base commander was moved.

“Even Ms. Holly treats this child like her own. Your family’s a model of military values.”

“Flynn, I’m confident giving you this deployment”

Flynn was eating it up, grinning ear to ear.

An aunt held the baby, cooing at him.

“Mira, he really looks like you. He’s gonna be a heartbreaker.”

Holly overheard and shot her a death glare. She grabbed the baby.

“Boys always look like their fathers! He’s obviously Flynn’s twin!”

The aunt glanced at me awkwardly. I just smiled.

Holly held the baby, clearly wanting some quality time before “leaving.”

But after just a few minutes, the baby looked right at her face–and burst into tears.

Then Holly shrieked. The blanket was soaked.

The aunt quickly took him. “Oh, he peed. Let me help change him.”

Holly liked the idea of the child but didn’t want the work–that’s why she’d dumped him on me.

She immediately let go in disgust, watching from a distance.

But the second the diaper came off, her face went white as a sheet. She let out a piercing scream.

Flynn walked over. “What’s going on? What’s all the noise?”

Holly just stared at the baby, her voice shaking.

“Why–why doesn’t he have the birthmark?!”
