Logan took a massive bite out of his burger. "So this is what you meant by burgers and fries?"
Sloane handed him a chicken nugget. "We burned a lot of calories over the last two days. I just wanted something high-fat."
Right as they were eating, Sloane's phone buzzed. It was Director Thomas Thorne.
She stepped outside to take the call.
When she returned to the booth, she looked at Logan with an apologetic wince. "You know how you told my grandfather I had an urgent situation at the hospital as an excuse to leave? Well, now there's an actual emergency at the hospital."
"Are you blaming me?" Logan asked, looking highly offended.
"We doctors are incredibly superstitious, okay?" Sloane started devouring her burger at record speed, trying to finish it as fast as possible.
"Slow down. You always eat like someone's about to steal your food." Logan grabbed a napkin and reached across the table, gently wiping a smudge of sauce from the corner of her mouth.
Sloane froze.
He was just wiping her face, but the gesture sent a strange, fluttering tickle straight to her heart.
The second he pulled his hand away, she went right back to inhaling her food.
Finishing her last bite, she stood up. "I have to go. I don't know if I'll be back tonight, and if I am, it'll be really late."
"Bye." Logan sat back, guarding a massive tray still loaded with a half-eaten burger, an apple pie, fries, and chicken wings.
He usually avoided heavily processed junk food, but since McDonald's fries were served fresh out of the fryer, he found it acceptable.

On the phone, Director Thorne had told Sloane that a top official from Capital City had a brain tumor and needed her to return for a joint consultation.
When Sloane arrived at the hospital, the VIP hadn't shown up yet.
Such was the reality of dealing with high-ranking politicians—doctors waited for them, not the other way around.
She waited for a full hour.
Throughout that entire hour, Sloane bitterly regretted not boxing up the leftover apple pie and fries. She hadn't even brought her soda.
