Zachary Valerius was the Mayor of Capital City.
Evelyn Vance, Sloane's mother, was his secretary and longtime confidante.
Zachary had lost his wife years ago, and Evelyn hadn't gotten together with him until several years after her own divorce. However, they had never officially married, nor did they ever acknowledge their relationship publicly.
Sloane had only discovered the truth by accident back in high school when she stopped by Evelyn's house to pick something up.
Since that day, Sloane had never stepped foot in Evelyn's home again.
Hearing Sloane's comforting words, Evelyn's voice immediately choked with emotion.
She grabbed Sloane's arm. "I can't even imagine what will happen if the surgery fails. Right now... he is the only family I have left."
Sloane stared at her.
*Then what am I?*
Oh right, she was just the unwanted baggage left over from her mother's failed marriage to her ex-husband.
Because Evelyn's relationship with Sloane's father was toxic, looking at Sloane was likely just a painful reminder of it.
A dull, familiar ache settled in Sloane's chest.
"Sloane," Evelyn pleaded, "Zachary's surgery is going to be a success, right?"
"We won't know if we can even operate until we review the scans," Sloane replied clinically.
"I am putting all my hope in you and your team. You have to cure him."
"We will do our best. It's our job as doctors."
A few minutes later, Zachary walked out of the imaging room.
The results would take another twenty minutes to process.
Zachary turned to Director Thorne. "I have some urgent matters to attend to. How about I head back to the office, and you can review the results when they come in? Call me once you have a finalized plan."
Thorne looked horrified. "You're going back to work? Sir, absolutely not. Your health must come first."
Zachary chuckled dismissively. "It can't be helped. Duty calls."
Evelyn grabbed his arm. "Zachary, please stop stressing over work right now. You need to go home and rest."
"I can't. There's a stack of briefs on my desk waiting for my signature."
