Sloane Sutton said to Miles Valerius, "I've already discussed the preliminary surgical plan with my mom. I can't say there are zero risks, but they are minimal. However, Zachary will need time to recover post-op, which might mean a transfer or early retirement from his mayoral duties."
Miles spoke with refined politeness. "Applying for medical retirement? Honestly, I've always felt my dad was too busy. He should have retired a long time ago."
"Yeah, so as his family, you should encourage him," she said. "If you have any questions moving forward, feel free to ask me anytime."
"Could I get your number, then?" Miles asked.
Sloane hesitated for a moment before nodding. "Sure."
She had two cell phones, one specifically dedicated to patients and their families.
As if reading her mind, Miles smiled. "You aren't giving me your work number, are you? You're Evelyn's daughter, and you know my dad. We're more than just doctor and patient's family—we should be friends. You should give me your personal number."
Sloane was speechless.
Miles pressed on, "I work in the military and I'm usually out of town. I might need to bother you directly regarding my dad's condition."
Reluctantly, Sloane gave him her personal number.

Inside the hospital room.
Zachary asked Evelyn, "Is Miles back?"
"Yes, he's discussing your condition with Sloane right now."
Zachary sighed with genuine appreciation. "Sloane is such a wonderful girl, and her medical skills are top-notch."
"She really is," Evelyn agreed. "She's been so independent since she was little. I never had to worry about her. While other parents were losing their minds over homework, Sloane always handled hers on her own and even skipped grades."
Zachary chuckled. "Keep that between us. If you brag like that to outsiders, they'll get jealous."
