While the two women were standing there, a middle-aged man stepped out of the doctor's office. Seeing them at the door, he asked, "Are you here to see a doctor or looking for someone?"
Sloane pulled out her dispatch letter. "We're here to report for duty."
The man scrutinized the papers and then stared hard at both of them.
"A neurosurgeon? With a Ph.D.?" he asked, staring at Sloane in sheer disbelief.
Sloane nodded.
"How did you end up here? This is a massive waste of talent. Whose brilliant idea was this?"
Sloane didn't have an answer for that.
The man shook his head. "Well, since you're a surgeon, get prepped immediately. We just got a guy who was chopping sugarcane this morning and managed to slice into his own leg. Took a massive chunk of flesh right off!"
"But I'm a neurosurgeon," Sloane clarified. "Not a general surgeon."
"Same difference! As long as you can stitch, get to it!"
He pointed toward the stairs. "Hurry up to the second floor. The OR is short-handed."
Sloane had no choice but to follow his orders.
When she reached the second-floor operating room, she found several doctors and nurses scrambling around in total chaos.
No wonder the ground floor had looked empty—the entire medical staff was crammed in here.
The man handed Sloane a set of scrubs and sterile gear, ordering her to change immediately.
Sloane didn't argue. She needed to assess the situation first.
Inside, two doctors were heatedly debating.
"With a gouge this deep, I'm afraid the nerve is compromised. If we mess this up, he might never walk properly again."
"Look, whatever happens, we have to close this wound. At this point, saving the leg is the priority!"
"But..."
Sloane stepped into the room. "Let me take a look."
The two doctors turned to stare at the masked woman. "Who the hell are you?"
The middle-aged man called out from the doorway, "She's our new doctor. Let her examine it."
Sloane approached the table. The patient was a teenage boy with a horrific, deep gash across his shin. The bone was visible, and only a thin flap of skin and muscle was holding the tissue together.
An injury this severe would absolutely impact the tibial nerve. It was a good thing Sloane had shown up.
