Miles Valerius strode toward them.
Zoe gasped, covering her mouth in shock. "What are you doing here?"
Miles offered a smooth smile. "I'm stationed with the military here."
"That explains it. You practically radiate authority."
Miles gave Zoe a polite smile before turning his full attention to Sloane. "Shall I take you to the naval hospital?"
"We can find it ourselves," Sloane replied coolly. "No need to trouble yourself."
"There's no public transportation on the island, and the roads are confusing. It's easy to get lost. Let me show you the way." Miles reached for Sloane's suitcase, but she held her ground, refusing to let go.
Without missing a beat, he grabbed Zoe's suitcase instead. "Let's go."
Zoe looked at Sloane innocently. "Uh..."
Knowing a public tug-of-war was pointless, Sloane sighed. "Just let him lead the way."

The island was a maze of intersecting paths. Anyone without a perfect sense of direction would be hopelessly lost in minutes.
Miles led them down a narrow, paved concrete road.
Scattered houses, vegetable patches, and fish ponds lined the way, flanked by tropical banana, mango, and jackfruit trees.
Some of the homes looked completely untouched since the turn of the century. Occasionally, a local fisherman would putter past on a motorized cart.
Miles played the tour guide. "South Reef Island has never been developed for tourism. Because access is so restricted, it feels a bit behind the times compared to the mainland. But don't worry, we do have internet. There are just certain firewalls in place, so not every website is accessible."
"The island is split into two halves: the Front and the Back. The Front Island is for the locals, and you can wander around freely. The Back Island is strictly for the military base. Civilians aren't allowed anywhere near it."
Sloane finally broke her silence. "Why is there zero mention of a military base on this island online?"
"Let's just say there's a lot you won't find on the internet."
