Who Knew My Assigned Mechanic Husband Was a Big Shot? novel Chapter 136

Hugo grumbled, "What's there to order? It's always the same seafood."

Jude chimed in, "Throw in some fried noodles."

Walter glared at them. "We live on an island! If we don't eat seafood, what do you expect? Dragon meat?"

Hugo sighed dramatically. "I want mainland junk food. A massive greasy burger, loaded fries, or a proper deep-dish pizza..."

Just listing the foods made everyone's mouths water.

"Didn't you just buy a whole box of instant spicy noodles?" Walter asked. "Why don't you just make those?"

Hugo looked deeply offended. "When I cook them in the dorms, you tell me I'm boiling garbage."

Walter gave a perfectly innocent shrug. "Well, cooking that radioactive stuff indoors is a bit much."

"We get two days off a month," Jude offered logically. "If you're craving junk food, just take the ferry to the mainland then."

"I guess that's the only way."

Hugo turned his attention to Sloane and Zoe. "So, how did you two end up getting assigned out here?"

Walter intercepted the question. "Don't ask. Let's just call it serving the people."

Sloane and Zoe nodded in agreement.

Walter turned to Sloane. "How much do you know about the setup here?"

"Just rumors, really. I heard there's a Front Island for locals and a Back Island for the military."

"There are about three thousand people living on this rock," Walter explained. "I won't get into the exact breakdown—that's classified. Naturally, the longer you stay, the more you'll pick up on, but keep it to yourself."

Zoe leaned in. "Do the soldiers from the base come to our clinic too?"

Hugo and Jude chuckled.

"This is a joint military-civilian facility. When they get hurt, this is exactly where they come."

Walter pointed at Jude and Hugo. "These two used to be field medics. They can handle most standard trauma."
