"She didn't come," Logan said, brushing past her and walking away without another word.

That evening.
Sloane was boiling noodles in her dorm room.
She didn't dare go back to the market just yet; Rosalie had picked up all the groceries in her fridge for her.
As she stirred the pot, someone knocked on the door.
Assuming it was Rosalie, she pulled it open.
Instead, Miles stood in the hallway.
He held a bag of fresh seafood. Seeing her, he hooked the bag onto her door handle and said, "I heard about what happened to you last night. I was worried. Are you okay?"
"I'm fine," Sloane replied coldly. She glanced at the bag. "Take the seafood. I don't need it."
She moved to shut the door, but Miles wedged his hand against the frame.
His eyes were entirely filled with concern. "Sloane, I can protect you."
"I don't need your protection!"
Miles frowned. "Are you still mad about my dad transferring out of your hospital? I admit, I was wrong about that. Your mother was wrong too. We didn't consider your situation, and it got you exiled out here."
"But I went to the county office, showed my credentials, and got you transferred to the island just so I could watch over you."
Sloane let out a dark chuckle. "Wow. You truly are a saint."
While they were arguing at the door, Hugo happened to stroll down the hallway.
Sloane grabbed the bag of seafood off the handle and shoved it into Hugo's arms. "For you."
Then she slammed the door shut in Miles's face.
Hugo blinked, looking down at the fresh catch. Free food always seemed to find him at the perfect time.
Rejected by Sloane once again, and having his gift handed off to another man, Miles was seething.
He stomped over to the Security Command, fully intending to beat the living daylights out of Shane.
But as he reached the entrance, logic prevailed.
