Dustin frantically waved his hands. "You don't have to do that! No matter how much you make, our commander isn't going to share a single bite with me."
"Why not?" Sloane asked, an image of a domineering, fierce man forming in her mind.
Dustin sighed. "Our commander doesn't like sharing anything with anyone."
*Makes sense,* she thought. *You probably have to be fierce to be a commander.*
Dustin then asked, "Did you listen to the song the commander gave you?"
"I did."
Sloane hadn't planned on going into detail, but seeing the eager anticipation in Dustin's eyes, she figured he was hoping for feedback.
"The song was beautiful. I especially loved that classic ballad, 'Always on My Mind'," she said softly.
Dustin grinned. "Great, I'll be sure to tell our commander."
After Dustin left, Zoe Ziegler strolled over to Sloane.
Watching Dustin's retreating figure, Zoe asked skeptically, "Does that Major have a crush on you or something?"
"Don't talk nonsense. He just misses the taste of home-cooked food."
Zoe crossed her arms. "Well, I'm from Capital City too. Why didn't he ask me to cook for him?"
Sloane looked at her and asked point-blank, "Do you even know how to cook?"
"...Not exactly, no."
Sloane chuckled. "People can tell just by looking at you that you don't know your way around a kitchen."
Zoe pouted. "So you're saying I don't give off 'good wife and loving mother' vibes, huh?"
Sloane smiled. "Does a woman have to be a good wife and loving mother? Isn't it perfectly fine to just look like a little princess?"
"Well, when you put it like that... But it still means I lost out because I can't cook. I'm going back to my dorm tonight to actually learn instead of just throwing things in a pot!"
Suddenly remembering something, Sloane asked, "By the way, do you happen to know the Major's first name?"
"It's L... Larry? Leo? Lucas? Lennox?" Zoe looked sheepish. "I completely forgot."
Sloane shook her head. "See? You don't even remember his name, which means you weren't actually interested in him anyway."
"He rejected me on the very first night. Of course I had to scrub him from my memory as fast as possible."
*
Perhaps because Sloane's cooking was so delicious, Dustin came by the very next day with a delivery of fresh seafood and local dried fish for her.
