Sloane saw the words "Family Member" printed on the invitation and frowned. "Is this... a family event?"
"Yes, it's a garrison event strictly for the family members of the military personnel."
"But I'm not a family member," Sloane pointed out.
Dustin had no choice but to recite the exact script Logan had taught him. "Well, you see, everyone else has family members to bring, except the Major. The entire base has been speculating that he's..."
When Dustin trailed off awkwardly, Sloane filled in the blank. "Speculating that he's gay?"
"That, and much worse."
Dustin sighed. "So, our commander was hoping you could do him a favor and pretend to be his family member. First, to put an end to all the ridiculous rumors, and second, to get the higher-ups off his back."
"Besides, you don't actually have to be married to attend. Girlfriends and sisters go all the time."
Sloane raised an eyebrow. "So I'm supposed to... pretend to be his girlfriend?"
Dustin looked mortified. "That is what the Major is suggesting, yes."
Sloane shook her head firmly. "I'm sorry, but I can't do that. I'm actually a married woman."
Dustin quickly countered, "Actually, the Major is a married man too! It's just that he always gets dumped, so no one here believes him."
*How pathetic.*
A twinge of sympathy tugged at Sloane's heart. She sighed. "Alright, fine. I'll go."
She figured she owed him this much for saving her life.

On Saturday evening, Sloane took the invitation bearing her name and entered the garrison's residential compound.
The event was being held in the recreation center, a massive space that functioned as a small auditorium but could also be cleared out to serve as a badminton or basketball court.
