Miles froze in shock.
Logan Lennox?
But Sloane simply fired back, "I'm nobody's family member!"
Miles quickly recovered, glaring sternly at Brenda. "You'd better stop spreading rumors. Have you forgotten the consequences of your last stunt?"
For a brief second, Brenda was too intimidated to speak.
But as the saying goes, a leopard never changes its spots.
Before she even made it back to her dorm, Brenda was already spinning her web of lies in the hallway.
"Did you hear? That new female doctor at the hospital is stringing along both the Major and Captain Valerius!"
Someone gasped. "Are you serious? You better not be making things up like you did with that brain surgery rumor. You'll ruin her reputation."
Brenda slapped her thigh dramatically. "I saw it with my own two eyes! How could it be fake? Weren't you guys there earlier? She showed up as the Major's family member, and the next thing I knew, she was leaving the building with Captain Valerius! I saw them together!"
Another woman chimed in, "Well, she's gorgeous. Isn't it normal for handsome men to be drawn to her?"
Brenda looked at them like they were utter fools. "That doesn't mean she gets to juggle two men at once! I was actually thinking of setting my own daughter up with the Major."
"Then go ahead and introduce them."
"He doesn't care for my daughter. He only likes those seductive types."
"Aren't all men like that? They just like pretty faces."
Brenda crossed her arms defiantly. "I said *seductive*! My daughter is pretty too!"

Sloane dropped the groceries off at the guardhouse, signed the ledger, and prepared to head back to the hospital.
Miles had followed her out.
Sloane turned around and asked, "Why are you following me?"
"I'm walking you back," Miles replied.
Sloane firmly rejected him again. "There's no need. You should go back."
Miles didn't follow her this time, but he stayed rooted to the spot, watching her leave.
After walking a distance, Sloane felt the weight of his gaze on her back and briefly glanced over her shoulder.
Miles was still standing exactly where she had left him, his eyes fixed unblinkingly on her.
For a fleeting second, Sloane's heart twinged.
