Who Knew My Assigned Mechanic Husband Was a Big Shot? novel Chapter 189

The man slowly turned around and locked eyes with Sloane.

She would never forget that look as long as she lived.

It was a gaze so purely malevolent it looked as if he had just crawled out of a mass grave.

But the terrifying expression vanished in a fraction of a second, instantly replaced by a warm, grateful smile.

Even so, an icy chill ran down Sloane's spine.

The man bowed his head politely. "Oh, you're the beautiful doctor who saved us last night, right?"

Sloane forced herself to remain completely professional. "What are you doing out of bed? Are you feeling better?"

"Much better, thanks to your incredible skills."

"What's your name?" Sloane asked, narrowing her eyes.

The man's accent didn't match the local islanders at all, and he looked to be in his mid-thirties.

"Me? I'm Sterling Sutton. The man you saved in surgery is my older brother, Sebastian Sutton. We're fishermen from Vanilla Isle. Our boat got ambushed by pirates in the middle of the night."

Just as Sterling finished his sentence, officers from Island Security Command stepped out of the elevator.

It was Officer Levi, the same cop who had interrogated Shane 'Seven' Vane back when the rumors were spreading.

"Sterling Sutton? How are you holding up?"

Sterling immediately hunched his shoulders, perfectly playing the part of a terrified fisherman. "I'm doing okay. Is there a problem, Officer?"

"Are you well enough to come down to the station? We just need to verify your identities and take a formal statement."

"I'm the victim here. Why do you need to investigate me?"

"Standard protocol."

Sterling nodded obediently. "Alright. I'll come with you."

As Sterling walked away with Levi, Sloane could hear the tail end of their conversation.

Levi: "Does your family know you're in the hospital?"

Sterling: "We were all out on the boats together. The pirates just came out of nowhere. Only my brother and I managed to escape. I have no idea if the rest of them... made it."

"The Navy has search grids actively sweeping the water. Try to stay positive."

Standing alone in the corridor, Sloane couldn't shake the creeping sense of dread.

If he was just a grieving victim, why had he looked at her with such dead, predatory eyes?
