That peaceful rhythm was violently shattered one night by the sound of screeching tires.
Sloane had been sound asleep when her phone buzzed. It was Director Walter Lucas.
"We've got severe casualties in the ER. You're the only one who can handle the surgical repairs. Can you get over here? If not, we'll have to transfer them to the mainland, but that's a two-hour trip they might not survive."
Sloane's priority was always her patients.
She sat up immediately. "I'm on my way. Be there in five."
She moved too fast, and a sharp spike of pain shot through her healing ribs, making her wince.
Beside her, Logan shot up, his eyes wide with concern. "Are you alright?"
Sloane took a deep, steadying breath until the pain subsided.
"I'm fine. Walter said they just brought in some critical trauma patients. I need to get to the OR."
Unwilling to let her walk the dark streets alone, Logan threw the covers off. "I'll take you."
But before his feet even hit the floor, his own phone started ringing.
It was Leo West. "Boss, the patrol boats just spotted pirates. We're wheels up immediately."
Logan's voice turned instantly lethal. "Copy that. On my way."
With both of them called to the front lines, they hurried down the elevator together.
When they reached the gates of the family quarters to part ways, Sloane's heart suddenly seized with an unfamiliar, terrifying panic.
"Logan..." she called out, stopping him in his tracks.
He turned back. "What's wrong?"
The night wind was howling off the ocean, the crashing waves sounding like distant thunder. Aside from a few flickering streetlights, the base was swallowed in total darkness.
Sloane's voice hitched, a sudden lump forming in her throat. "Stay safe out there. Please, come back in one piece!"
He smiled softly, stepping back to gently pinch her cheek. "What's this? Worried about me?"
"Just... promise me you'll come back safe!"
Back when she hadn't known he was military, she used to despise hearing he was going out on "work assignments."
But now that she knew the truth, every deployment felt like a knife twisting in her gut.
