Who Knew My Assigned Mechanic Husband Was a Big Shot? novel Chapter 205

Danielle ignored Dustin's question, her mind entirely consumed by the words 'the Civil Affairs Bureau'.

Could a state-assigned marriage possibly have any real love in it?

Most people only did it to dodge the bachelor tax, didn't they?

Seeing her silence, Dustin pressed, "Captain Ziegler, are you okay?"

Danielle didn't answer; she just turned and walked away.

Dustin scratched his head.

She was always like that—using people for information and then tossing them aside.

Back in the dorm.

Sloane and Logan were still eating.

Logan placed a piece of food in Sloane's bowl. "Here, it's your favorite fried fish."

"Thank you," Sloane said.

"No need to be so polite."

Sloane offered a faint smile.

But a hint of sadness crept into her heart.

It felt as if they had regressed to the overly polite, distant dynamic they had before she got injured.

After dinner, he washed the dishes while she took a shower.

When she stepped out of the bathroom, she saw him sitting on the balcony, staring blankly into the distance.

Night had fallen, leaving nothing but darkness out there.

Sloane didn't disturb him and headed straight to the bedroom.

But the door hadn't latched properly, and a sudden gust of wind slammed it shut with a loud bang.

Sloane jumped, and Logan snapped out of his daze on the balcony.

"It was just the wind," Sloane said awkwardly.

Logan walked in. "The latch is a bit loose. Once I'm done showering, I'll wedge a piece of cardboard in the frame so it won't slam like that again."

"Okay, sounds good."

But Logan never wedged the cardboard in the door after his shower.

As the hot water cascaded over his head and body, his mind kept replaying memories of his past with Danielle.

They had fought side by side.

Yet eight months ago, she had blindsided him with a breakup.

He had tried everything to make her stay, but she was adamant about leaving.
