"A headache."
"Can you describe the symptoms?" Sloane asked professionally. "Where exactly does it hurt? Or when does it usually trigger?"
Danielle replied smoothly, "It hurts whenever I remember that Logan is married."
Sloane was speechless.
"I see. A heartache needs a cure of the heart. But if you're hoping Logan and I get a divorce, you're out of luck."
Danielle leaned back in the chair, adopting a superior posture. "You two were paired up by the Civil Affairs Bureau, right? A marriage with absolutely zero emotional foundation. Is that really going to last? Do you even love him?"
Love?
Sloane admitted to herself that, in the beginning, she only had a slight crush on Logan.
But over time, she knew she had genuinely fallen for him.
Otherwise, why would her chest ache so much knowing about his ex?
But she had no idea if Logan loved her back.
She looked at Danielle evenly. "Like you said, it's just a state-mandated pairing. What does love have to do with it?"
Danielle crossed her legs. "So, you're only staying with him because you have the piece of paper that says you're married?"
"What are you getting at?" Sloane challenged. "If I say yes, are you going to judge this kind of marriage? Or are you planning to wait until we've met our reproductive quota so you can swoop in when we divorce?"
Danielle shook her head with a patronizing smirk. "I heard you have a PhD. I'm shocked you'd settle for a loveless marriage."
"Let me put it this way," Sloane said, neither haughty nor humble. "If it were any other guy, maybe I couldn't accept it. But it's Logan Lennox. Based purely on his physical appearance, I'm more than satisfied. Not to mention, he's an elite soldier."
Danielle scoffed. "So you're just obsessed with his body. You're no different from those desperate women drooling over hot guys on social media."
"You're absolutely right. I'm not on some higher moral ground. Staring at a gorgeous man puts me in a good mood. Why wouldn't I enjoy it?"
