Logan's hand shook as he took the phone.
Reading the transfer order, it felt as though something had physically struck him in the chest, leaving a hollow, aching pain in its wake.
"But..." Logan stammered, "even if she was deploying on a black op, why did she have to break up with me?"
Miles shook his head slowly. "Don't you get it, Logan? A mission like that has a catastrophic mortality rate. It required absolute radio silence. No contact with anyone on the outside who could potentially compromise her cover.
Some allied nations even require operatives to be strictly single before authorizing deployment. If she hadn't pushed you away, you would have spent every waking moment trying to find her. And who's to say it would only be six months? It could have been a year. Two years. Three. Or she might never have come back at all. She didn't want to trap you in an endless waiting game!"
Logan stood frozen, the world tilting on its axis.
That fiercely proud, unbreakable woman had silently shouldered an unimaginable burden just to keep him safe!

At noon, in the family residential quarters.
Logan stood outside his own dorm door, but he couldn't bring himself to turn the knob.
He paced anxiously in the hallway for a moment before making a decision. He needed to see Danielle.
Her dorm was on the same floor, just down the corridor on the opposite side.
But what Logan didn't know was that Sloane was inside their apartment.
Because the medical training was so grueling, Director Walter Lucas had given the participating medical staff the day off to recover.
So, Sloane was lounging on the sofa. She had heard footsteps outside and felt a flutter of excitement, only for the sound to fade away.
Was it not Logan?
Curious, she walked to the door and cracked it open, just in time to see Logan's broad back retreating down the hall.
She assumed he was going to see one of his teammates.
But to her dismay, he stopped in front of Danielle's door and knocked.
Sloane froze.
Thinking back to how he had paced anxiously outside their own door just moments ago, she realized something was deeply wrong.
