Sloane wandered out of the residential complex, feeling completely dead inside.
The afternoon sun was blindingly bright, but a cold, damp misery had settled deep in her chest. All she could see was the image of Danielle throwing herself into Logan's arms.
Why hadn't he pulled away?
He was the one who had knocked on her door. He was the one who had said those desperate words to her.
After spending every day together during training, had his feelings for her reignited?
A crushing sense of inadequacy washed over Sloane. She felt more convinced than ever that she wasn't meant to hold onto anything beautiful in this life.
"Sloane."
A voice called out from behind.
She spun around and found Miles standing there.
Tears were still glistening on her cheeks.
She hurriedly wiped them away and averted her face, refusing to look at him.
But Miles closed the distance between them. "Eight months ago, Danielle took Logan's place on a highly classified, suicidal op. She was terrified she wouldn't come back, so she forced him into a breakup."
Sloane felt a fresh wave of agony slice through her heart. "So... this is just a classic romance movie trope, right? The heroine makes the ultimate sacrifice for love. The hero is devastated, moves on with someone else, and then the heroine miraculously returns. The misunderstanding is cleared up, and they live happily ever after."
Miles sighed. "Honestly, I'm the one who spilled the secret. I couldn't stand watching Danielle be misunderstood anymore. She's a phenomenal soldier, and she loved him with everything she had."
Sloane let out a hollow laugh. "Which makes my love parasitic. I took advantage of his vulnerability. I should just step aside and let them have their happy ending, shouldn't I?"
Miles hesitated. "I only wanted to clear the air. As for how the three of you navigate this mess... I have no idea. I'm not exactly equipped to handle emotional fallout."
Sloane managed a faint, bitter smile. "Oh, I think you handled it perfectly. You're much more efficient than most."

Back at Danielle's dorm.
As Danielle clung to him, weeping into his chest, Logan stood paralyzed, entirely unsure of what to do.
She was his former love. She had sacrificed her life, her career, and her happiness to keep him safe.
Not only had she endured a hellish deployment, but she had returned to the devastating blow of seeing the man she loved married to someone else.
He couldn't bring himself to shove her away.
