Just as the command center let out a collective sigh of relief, Logan, who was currently inspecting a suspect's duffel bag on the screen, abruptly froze. He snapped his head up and roared, "Something's wrong!"
"What is it?" Danielle immediately spun around, pressing her back flush against the bulkhead near the hatch.
Logan crouched down and ripped back the tarp covering the hold. The moment he laid eyes on the dark, sinister casing of an explosive device, he roared, "Bomb! Everyone in the water! Now!"
Barely two seconds passed before the commandos processed the order. They scrambled up the gangways toward the main deck, vaulting over the rails and plunging into the ocean. Within moments, their life vests popped, keeping them safely afloat at a distance.
Danielle had enough time to jump—she was guarding the door closest to the rail and only needed to swing a leg over. Her hand flew to the pull-tab on her auto-inflating life vest, but when she yanked it, the familiar hiss of gas never came. The valve had likely been crushed during the initial ship collision. The locking pin was jammed tight, and no matter how hard she wrenched at it, the manual override refused to budge.
A bright red malfunction light flashed violently on her tactical harness. Deep in the ship's bowels, the faint, rapid ticking of the detonator echoed through the steel plating, a sound terrifying enough to freeze the blood.
Seeing her struggle, Logan bellowed over the chaos, "There's no time! Jump!"
"But—!"
"Hold on to me!"
Logan wrapped his arms tightly around her, dragging her backward over the railing.
The instant their boots cleared the deck, a deafening shockwave ripped through the air.
A massive fireball engulfed the sky!
Blistering heat and wreckage rained down over the churning waves.
When Logan broke the surface, gasping for air, Danielle was nowhere to be seen.
A suffocating dread seized his throat. He screamed her name over the roaring inferno, "Danielle! Danielle!"
Back on the support ship, Sloane stared at the monitor, her heart leaping into her throat.
Where was she?
The chief medical officer barked orders for the team to board the medevac chopper. Sloane grabbed her trauma kit and sprinted for the helipad.
But her mind was entirely consumed with Danielle's fate.
