The atmosphere in the room instantly plummeted to freezing.
Danielle let out a self-deprecating laugh. "Married men really are different."
Hearing Logan's response, a fleeting spark of warmth ignited in Sloane's chest.
Because of those few words, she felt a sudden, distinct boundary—she and Logan were a unit, and Danielle was the outsider.
She turned to Logan. "I have some pots and fresh groceries at my dorm. If you're free, you can go use my kitchen."
Sending a man to his wife's kitchen to cook for his ex-girlfriend?
Logan hesitated, entirely unsure if he should accept Sloane's olive branch.
Even Danielle seemed taken aback by the offer.
Perhaps attempting to orchestrate some alone time, Danielle played up her fragile state. "I actually would love some hot soup. If it's not too much trouble, Logan."
Sloane handed Logan the keys mentally. "My door has a keypad lock. You already know the passcode."
Logan could feel the invisible, crackling tension between the two women. After a few agonizing seconds of deliberation, he decided that staying in the room was a terrible idea.
He stood up. "Alright. I'll go make it right now."
As Logan hurried out of the ward, Sloane addressed her patient. "Get some rest. Press the call button the second you feel any discomfort."
"Hold on," Danielle commanded.
Sloane paused. "Is there something else?"
Danielle gestured for Sloane to take a seat.
Even pale and bedridden, Danielle radiated an undeniable, predatory dominance.
"Sloane, I think I'm going to steal your man back," Danielle stated flatly.
Sloane's eyes flickered slightly, but she managed a serene smile. "Feel free."
Danielle pressed her advantage. "Logan and I had a terrible misunderstanding. Now that everything is out in the open, it's obvious he still cares deeply for me. I might have been unconscious these past few days, but I knew he never left my side.
You're just a placeholder, Sloane. You got here late."
