Who Knew My Assigned Mechanic Husband Was a Big Shot? novel Chapter 231

Danielle Ziegler's finger gently pressed against Logan's lips, her eyes betraying a swirl of complex, unspoken emotions. Deep down, she knew this was just a test, but when Logan actually prepared to speak, she suddenly terrified of hearing his answer.

"Don't say it," she interrupted softly, her voice trembling. "Going to Cordovia was my own choice. Just having this right now... is enough." She lowered her head and stirred the bowl of hot soup. Through the rising steam, a single tear slipped silently into the broth.

Logan silently watched her slightly shaking shoulders. In the end, he simply pushed the bowl a little closer to her. "Eat while it's hot."

"Yeah..." Danielle scooped up a spoonful and brought it to her lips. The salty sting of her tears mixed with the savory broth on her tongue. "It's delicious..." The smile she forced out looked far more agonizing than if she had simply cried.

At the end of the corridor, Logan leaned against the window and lit a cigarette. In the quiet night, the glowing cherry of the cigarette flickered, mirroring the chaotic state of his mind. The glass pane reflected his deeply furrowed brow. As the faint sound of sobbing drifted from the hospital room, his fingers tightened unconsciously around the cigarette.

"Sloane, have you caught the news these past few days?"

At noon, Director Walter Lucas asked Sloane Sutton.

"Are you talking about the astronaut returning to Earth?" Sloane asked.

"Exactly."

Sloane smiled. "I saw it."

"In the past, the returning capsules usually touched down in the desert," Director Lucas said. "But this time, they've chosen an ocean splashdown. So, we'll have to be on standby out at sea again."

"Not a problem," Sloane smiled. "It's an honor to see the astronauts step out of that capsule."

As Director Lucas spoke, he kept a close eye on her expression.

Sloane caught onto his subtle scrutiny. "Director Lucas, you have an ulterior motive here. What is it you actually want to tell me?"

Director Lucas laughed heartily. "You saw right through me. You're so sharp, I doubt any man could ever deceive you. Unless, of course, you wanted to be deceived."

Thinking of Logan, Sloane offered a self-deprecating smile. "Yes. Lying to yourself is the most terrifying thing of all."

"You really shouldn't overthink things," Director Lucas said gently. "Logan is a man who values loyalty. The Black Rose saved his life. Now that she's injured, it makes sense that he's taking care of her. Sure, it bends the rules a bit, but if he abandoned her now, it would break her heart. She might come from a prestigious background, but her parents are high-ranking officials dealing with national affairs every day. They don't have time for her."

Sloane smiled bitterly.
