Sloane didn't reply. Landon answered for her: "She wanted fresh air? Does she not have any other family or friends? Why do you have to be the one keeping her company?"
"It's a long story." Logan kept his eyes fixed on Sloane. "But she's almost fully recovered. Once she's discharged, she won't need me looking after her anymore."
Sloane's gaze drifted toward Danielle, who stood a short distance away, making zero effort to step forward and exchange pleasantries. Sloane lightly tugged on Landon's sleeve.
"The scenery is beautiful today," Sloane said, her voice soft but laced with an undeniable finality. "Why don't we go look somewhere else?"
Landon caught her meaning immediately, a smile touching his eyes. "Sounds perfect. I heard the seafood stalls on this island are incredible. You definitely can't get anything that fresh up in space."
"Then let me treat you today." Sloane offered a radiant smile, looping her arm through Landon's once more as she turned to leave.
Logan stood frozen, his eyes darting between Sloane's retreating silhouette and Danielle standing quietly behind him.
The sea breeze ruffled his hair, but it couldn't sweep away the heavy suffocation settling over his chest.
He felt as though he were standing at a brutal crossroads.
On his left was the warmth of a grounded, beautiful reality; on his right, the heavy, unpaid debt of a phantom past. Stepping forward meant betraying the woman who had saved him, but turning back meant breaking the heart of the woman he loved.
Standing in place, Danielle watched Logan's hesitation, a bitter pang of sorrow welling up inside her.
But almost immediately, she let it go.
It was completely normal for him to be reluctant to let go of someone as beautiful as Sloane. His hesitation just proved he wasn't a cold, heartless man.
And if he was conflicted, it meant she still held a significant place in his heart.

After a full day of rest, the other astronauts prepared to leave the island.
But Landon had already coordinated with his superiors and decided to stay on the island for a couple of extra days.
It happened to be the weekend. The morning was clear and the sea breeze was gentle. Landon called Sloane. "Are there any other fun places to check out around here?"
Sloane thought for a moment. "The island is pretty small. Unless you don't mind walking the same scenic routes twice?"
