Who Knew My Assigned Mechanic Husband Was a Big Shot? novel Chapter 44

She quickly pulled up the real-time imaging, pointing to the screen where the brain tissue was visibly drifting toward the opposite side. "If you forcefully excise it now, it will almost certainly trigger a brain herniation!"

"But if we stop now, the remaining tumor will keep compressing the area, and everything we just did will be for nothing!"

Director Thorne couldn't bear to abandon the procedure when he was this close, especially with the sheer weight of public scrutiny crashing down on him.

But Sloane didn't back down. "Director, his vitals are already crashing!"

Director Thorne fell silent.

He knew she was right. Decades of experience told him these were the textbook warning signs of a brain herniation.

Yet, the thought of walking away from a nearly complete tumor resection tore at his pride.

Outside the OR.

Wendy Lucas and her two children paced the floor.

It had been five hours. When was this nightmare going to end?

Just then, Dr. Lawrence Lowe happened to walk past. Desperate, Wendy rushed over and intercepted him.

"Doctor, please, could you go in and find out what's happening?"

Dr. Lowe sighed. "Ma'am, you need to be patient. Our surgeons are in the middle of a delicate procedure. As soon as there's news, you'll be the first to know."

Wendy suddenly collapsed to the floor in front of Dr. Lowe, grabbing the hem of his lab coat.

"No, please, doctor! Just go look. You only have to tell me if he's still alive! I'm begging you!"

Dr. Lowe looked down at Wendy's tear-streaked face, his resolve wavering.

While he wasn't officially on the surgical team, he regularly shadowed Director Thorne on his rounds and knew Wendy and Liam well.

"Alright, I'll go check."

Dr. Lowe couldn't actually enter the sterile OR.

But he could access the adjacent surgical monitoring room.

Given the high-profile nature of the case, the entire hospital administration was gathered there, glued to the live feed.

Dr. Lowe slipped in, watched the monitors for a moment, and stepped back out shortly after.

"Doctor, how is he?" Wendy sobbed.

Dr. Lowe patted her shoulder heavily. "Don't worry. Your husband is going to live."

"Oh, thank God! Does that mean the surgery was a success?"
